DHIA Opinion Poll
In an effort to better serve its membership, the directors of the Red Rose Dairy
Herd Improvement Association have decided to' evaluate its currently offered
testing programs.
The dairy production testing programs currently offered by the Pennsylvania
DHIA are: DHIR, regular DHIA, ALT - AM - PM, and owner sampler.
It is the desire of the Red Rose DHI Association to make available to every
interested dairyman in Lancaster County, the type of testing program the
dairyman needs and wants. To fullfill this desire the directors must know the
feelings of the county dairyman.
To make your feelings known, please complete the questionnaire found below.
Give your completed questionnaire to any local DHIA director, or mail it to Red
Rose DHIA, 1383 Arcadia Road, Room 1, Lancaster, Pa. 17601

About Selling Heifers
Many of our county dairymen
are going to be short on hay and
silage this winter because of the
combined effects of hurricane
Agnes and the more recent dry
weather. One of the many
management alternatives to be
considered in dealing with this
shortage of forages is the selling
of heifers to save all available
forage for the milking herd.
In general it will be an unwise
decision to sell heifers if you will
be needing replacements or if you
intend to expand within the next
two years. The prediction is that
herd replacements will be much
higher for the next two years,
because many dairymen are
selling their current heifer crop.
Everyone will be bidding up the
price on herd replacements when
we again have a normal feed
supply.
Joe Taylor at Penn State ad
vises that dairymen who can
afford to buy government grain
at reduced prices should consider
buying enough to keep their
heifer replacements rather than
to sell them now.
