Solanco Fair

On Wednesday evening, 17-
year-old Peggy Jackson was
crowned queen of the fair. Peggy
is a senior at Solanco High
School, and she’s the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Jay Richard
Jackson, Quarryville RD2.
Thursday’s activities were
highlighted by the Lancaster
County FFA judging contest
which was held in the morning.

were on hand to test their skills at
judging dairy and beef animals,
hogs and poultry.
The results of the contest will
be tabulated and announced at
the next regular meeting of the
county’s vo-ag teachers.
After the judging contest, local
dairy breed associations
awarded calves to FFA members
who had scored the highest
marks in contests for the calves.
Don Weaver, who is 14 years
old, won the Ayrshire calf. Don is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. John M.
Weaver, New Holland RDI, and
is a sophomore at Garden Spot

Bill Krantz was first in the FFA
competition, Tom Stottlemyer
was second, Jeff Rutt was third
and Robert Gerhart was fourth.
In the hog contest, Mike
Landis, 16, won the prize for the
grand champion feeder pig with a
240-pound crossbreed. Mike is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. John I.
Landis, New Providence.
Rick Tindall, 15, had the grand
champion sow. Rick is a
sophomore at Solanco, and is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Tindall, Jr., Peach Bottom RDI.
The grand champion sow and
litter prize was won by Paul
Hippie, a 17-year-old Solanco
junior from New Providence
RDI. Paul is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Brandt T. Hippie.
The grand champion steer of
the fair was shown by Karen
Weaver, 13, from Swift Junior
High. She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jason L. Weaver, and
won her prize with a 935 pound
Hereford.

High School. His calf came from
the EUis Mentzer farm.
Dave Gerhart, also 14, got the
Guernsey calf. Dave is a
sophomore at Solanco, and is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester
Gerhart, New Providence RDI.
His calf came from the Bren
neman Farm.
The Holstein calf went to Scott
Steffy, 16, a sophomore at Garden
Spot. Scott is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jason Steffy, Leola. His calf
came from John Yost in New
Holland.
After the judging contest, the
FFA groups vied for the tug-o’-
war championship of Lancaster
County. Solanco tugged its way to
a hard won victory.
Bill Krantz took grand
champion honors in the tractor
driving contest held in the af
ternoon. His point total was the
best in both the open and FFA
classes.
In the open tractor driving
class, the top four winners were
Jim Tollinger, first, Walter
Haverstick, Jr, second, A. Dale
Herr, third, and Paul Trimble,
first.

show and breed champion with
her Hereford.
In the 4-H Hereford contest,
Sam Long took first prize in the
lightweight category, while the
heavyweight prize went to Karen
Weaver.
