Hog Carcass Show
Slated At Lampeter
A hog carcass show will be
sponsored this year by the
Lampeter Fair. John Hinkel, a
prominent Lancaster County hog
breeder, said the carcass show
was arranged so producers could
compare their animals’ live
judging results with carcass
evaluations.
Hinkel said he feels more and
more hog shows will be going to
carcass evaluations after live
judging. It’s a movement he
favors because, as he says, “This
is the only way you can really tell
what kind of an animal you’ve
got. Live appearance is a good
indicator, but it doesn’t tell you
everything.”
Hinkel said there will be one

entry allowed per farm. Persons
who’d like to enter the show
should send their names and a $1
entry fee to: John Hinkel, Willow
Glen Farm, Strasburg, Rl, 17579.
Hinkel said he should have all the
entries by Sept. 26.
Hogs should be at the Lampeter
Fair by noon on September 28.
They’ll be judged live at 3:00, and
slaughtered the next day. Car
casses will be evaluated on Oc
tober 2 at E. W. Martin Co.,
Bridgeport.
The hogs can be either barrows
or gilts, and should have a live
weight of 190 to 220 pounds.
There will be five prizes for live
judging, $2O, $l5, $lO, $5 and $5.
Prizes for rail judging will be $25,
$2O, $l5, $lO and $5.
