Dave Young, in his first year of competition, showed the grand champion FFA steer at the Solanco Fair on Thursday. His steer was also the grand champion Charolais. David did quite well in the hog competition, too, coming away with several first prizes. Hog Carcass Show Slated At Lampeter A hog carcass show will be sponsored this year by the Lampeter Fair. John Hinkel, a prominent Lancaster County hog breeder, said the carcass show was arranged so producers could compare their animals’ live judging results with carcass evaluations. Hinkel said he feels more and more hog shows will be going to carcass evaluations after live judging. It’s a movement he favors because, as he says, “This is the only way you can really tell what kind of an animal you’ve got. Live appearance is a good indicator, but it doesn’t tell you everything.” Hinkel said there will be one v - 0 r &sr alture . I t ", r. ‘fj 7nr1.~, H |J l ' / x entry allowed per farm. Hogs should be at the Lampeter Fair by noon on September 28. They’ll be judged live at 3:00, and slaughtered the next day. Car casses will be evaluated on Oc tober 2 at E. W. Martin Co., Bridgeport. The hogs can be either barrows or gilts, and should have a live weight of 190 to 220 pounds. There will be five prizes for live judging, $2O, $l5, $lO, $5 and $5. Prizes for rail judging will be $25, $2O, $l5, $lO and $5. The questionnaire is aimed at determining whether or not DHIA can and should be increased in Lancaster County. Top Cow Brings 9 2200 During Guernsey Sale A Guernsey milking 75 pounds a day brought a top price of $2200 at a September 18 Pennsylvania- Maryland Guernsey sale at the Guernsey Sales Pavilion. The top female was consigned by A.J. Celestine, Scenery Hill, Pa., and bought by Joe Fava of Scenery Hill. Altogether, 46 head were consigned to the sale by selected breeders from Pennsylvania and Maryland. The 41 cows sold for an average of $745.75, while five bulls went for an average price of $587. The top bull brought $1,050, and Dairy cows were judged Wednesday with a three-year-old Holstein owned by Landis Weaver, Oak Shade, named grand champion of the show among cows owned and bred by the exhibitor. The reserve grand champion of the show was a two-year old Guernsey cow shown by Betty Jo Bitler, 14, od Wakefield. In the breed show, Holsteins shown by Maurice Welk took both breed champion and reserve champion honors in the senior class. A cow shown by Donna Akers, Quarryville RDI, topped the junior Holstein class, with Gary Welk’s cow named junior reserve champion. Roger Shaub, Quarryville, had the grand champion Jersey, and a cow shown by George and Doris Hough, Peach Bottom RDI, the reserve, in senior competition. Ellen Schmuck, Peach Bottom RD2, exhibited the junior champion Jersey, while Kathy Kreider, Quarryville RDI, had the junior reserve Jersey. All but six of the animals stayed in Pennsylvania. One went to Massachusetts, three went to Virginia, and two went to Frederick, Maryland. The sale was managed by the Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders’ Association and the Merryman Company from Sparks, Md. John Merryman was the auctioneer.
