Hearings Scheduled
Secretary of Agriculture, Jim
McHale, said the proposed new
regulations deal with minimum
cooling standards, maximum
time lapse between milking and
delivery to the milk plant and the
stamping of “sell by” dates on
milk cartons or caps.
T0:00 A.M. Sharp!
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 9.1972
For September 18
The changes are suggested so
that Pennsylvania standards will
be equal to adjacent states where
much of the Commonwealth’s
annual milk production of more
than 3>/4 billion gallons is sold.
The cooling regulations are not
essentially new but are more
specific particularly when
dealing with milk that is stored in
cans or not cooled before pick-up
and delivery to the milk plant
Most milk on Pennsylvania dairy
farms is stored in cooling tanks
Minimum cooling standards will
be established for the first time
for the shipment of milk between
processing plants
Another totally new section of
the code is the open dating of fluid
milk. Milk cartons and bottle
caps must clearly show a “sell
by” date. The date will be the 7
days after the product has been
pasteurized. At that time the milk
can no longer be offered for sale
The most stringent proposal on
the handling of milk is the
lowering of the minimum cooling
requirement from 50 degrees to
45 degrees while finished
pasteruized and bottled milk is
being transported
The final regulations will be
drawn up after a review of the
testimony at the hearing and will
become part of the Pennsylvania
Code
Most sea hoises, including
the northern sea horse,
reach a length of five to six
inches when fully grown
but the dwarf sea horse is
never more than two inches
long
