while failing to raise the level of
topsoil moisture.
More than three-fourths of the
data collecting stations in the
state now report that water
supplies are short compared with
just two-thirds a week earlier.
Throught the spring rain,
tropical storm and the post-flood
periods, plowing was slowed or
stopped because fields were too
soggy to support equipment. Now
plowing is hampered because the
soil is hard and crusty.
Adding to the drought con
ditions was the first warmer than
normal week since mid-July.
Over half of the stations reported
highs in the 9d’s while the balance
were in the mid-to-high 80’s.
Crop development is being
slowed by the lack of water.

9th Pa. All-American Dairy
Show Slated for Sept. 25-29
Dairy farmers, their herdsmen
and showmen will be working
around the clock primping their
prize cattle in hopes of bringing
home a bigger share of the
rewards being offered in some
227 classes at the Ninth Annual
Pennsylvania All-American
Dairy Show.
The All-American opens
Monday, September 25, 1972, for
a five-day stand at the Farm
Show dairy barns and main
arena.

Although the ribbons, rosettes,
banners and cash premiums are
much sought after by the
dairymen, the opportunity to
come home with a real bundle of
money exists in the Pennsylvania
All-American Invitational Breed
Sales.
There are four sales in all on
consecutive days through
Thursday, September 28. Each is
hosted by a state breed
association and last year’s sales
brought a total of $lBO,OOO in
spirited bidding.
Last year's sales also produced
a new record for a single animal
at a public auction in Penn
sylvania. Peters Farm ABC
Ivanhoe, a seven-month-old bull
calf consigned by Emil G. Peters,
Port Matilda, Centre County,
brought $41,000 from a Central
Pennsylvania syndicate of dairy
breeders.
The Pennsylvania Holstein
Association has located another
bull calf for the 1972 sale, a
paternal brother of Peters Farm
ABC Ivanhoe, and sale officials
believe he could bring half again
as much as his illustrious half
brother. Both were sired by the
famous Osborndale Ivanhoe.
The Pennsylvania Ayrshire
Breeders Association will be
joining the line-up of breed sales
for the first time at this year’s
dairy show. Other groups also
holding sales are the Penn
sylvania State Brown Swiss
Association and the Penn
sylvania Jersey Cattle Club, Inc.
The Brown Swiss will be the
first to go under the hammer at 7
p.m., Monday, followed by the
Ayrshires at 1 p.m. Wednesday
