Broiler Placements
In State Continue
Downward Trend
The placement of broiler chicks
returned to the downside as
150,000 fewer were started on
feed, a drop of 12 percent and 22
percent less than die same week
a year ago, according to a report
last week from the Pennsylvania
Crop Reporting Service.
The current 10-week average is
now trailing last year by nine
percent while U S. totals continue
to show a slight but steady
growth. In recent years Penn
sylvania has ranked 12th 'in
broiler production but appears to
be headed for a drop of one or two
places this-yeaf.
The setting of eggs for broiler
type hatch is also off on the
averages This decline is being
compounded by the large number
of day-old chicks that are shipped
out-of-state for feeding. The 10-
week average of outshipments is
260,000.
Pennsylvania slaughters many
broiler and fryers than they
produce. The most recent weekly
total was 1,445,000 with an
average weight of 4.03 pounds.
