Yearbook
(Continued From Page 1)
a handbook designed to help
people improve their en
vironments with plants. It’s
crammed with information for
home gardeners in the city, in
the suburbs or in the country.
It wasn’t written to be a
management reference guide for
the working farmer. In recent
years, in fact, the USDA Year
books haven’t really aimed
strictly at the farmer.
Commenting on this fact, editor
Hayes said, “It’s hard to say just
when the trend away from
strictly farming topics started.
The 1954 Yearbook,
“Marketing”, might be con
sidered a part of this trend, but of
course marketing is strongly
related to farming. “Food”, the
1959 Yearbook, is a similar in
stance. Would “A Place to Live”,
the 1963 Yearbook, represent the
new trend? I suppose “Con
sumers All”, the 1965 Yearbook,
certainly would.”
Hayes has been the Yearbook
editor since 1965. Before being
appointed to the editorship, he
was with USDA’s press service
for nine years, and before that he
was with the Washington Star.
Besides the monumental task
of coordinating the work of the 82
authors who helped write
“Landscape for Living”, Hayes
took some of the photographs for
the book. Altogether, 32 pages of
color photographs appear in the
416-page book.
Most of the authors are USDA
specialists, but there are also
nurserymen, landscape ar
chitects, foresters, hor
ticulturists, specialists from the
land-grant universities, and
retired professionals.
“Landscape for Living” is the
73rd volume to carry the title,
Yearbook of Agriculture. This
designation formally began with
the 1894 volume and a Yearbook
has been issued annually since.
