    Want a Horse? See Abe.
(Continued From Page 6)
Both horses and buyers come
from all over to participate in the
New Holland auction. Last
Monday, there were buyers from
throughout the East and as far
west as Illinois and Indiana.
Horses had been trucked in
from Kansas, lowa, Illinois and
Ohio. “On an average day,”
Diffenbach says, “we’ll sell
anywhere from 300 to 400 horses.
Some will be used for draft
animals, some for pulling
buggies or sulkies. We sell a lot of
horses for pleasure riding. We
also get some donkeys, ponies
and mules, and there are some
every week that go into dog
food.”
Diffenbach is a partner in the
company, and in addition to being
the sales manager, he oc
casionally calls a sale. He had, in
fact, been an auctioneer in
Lancaster County since 1946. He
keeps his vocal chords limber by
calling farm sales every now and
then.
And every Tuesday, when
things are kind of slow in New
Holland, Diffenbach travels to
New York and auctions off cars
at a big auto auction. From
horses on Monday to horsepower
on Tuesday, back to New Holland
for cows on Wednesday and
steers on Thursday. Auctions
keep Abe Diffenbach busy, and
he says that’s the way he likes it.
Some days over 400 horses
enter the show ring at New
Holland.
Leaving New Holland Sales Stables with look over some of the animals he DIDN'T
a brand new purchase, a buyer stretches to buy.
