The use of nitrogen in the fertilizer for established stands of alfalfa is still questionable, as a starter fertilizer for new stands, the nitrogen is helpful in getting a stronger plant in a shorter length of time L. This announcement was made as a result of a study of 1971-72 program operations which revealed that a few producers with farms having both poor quality and quality cropland have offered the poor-quality for set aside and accepted deductions from their farm payments. The deductions were not enough to offset the monetary advantage gained by producing crops on the quality acreage rather than setting it aside from production. New Floating Storage System Halts Oil Spills I I * \ \ '1 ‘ I A new antipollution trans fer and storage pumping sys tem to prevent oil from spill ing, rather than containing or collecting damaging spills after they occur, has been an nounced by Ocean Science and Engineering, Inc, Long Beach, Calif. The system can be dropped from a cargo plane or heli copter or delivered by an other ship and deploys imme diately, according to William H. Glennon, president. “OSE’s portable pump is then lowered into the stricken vessel’s tanks and connected to the rubber-nylon container floating along-side,” he con tinued. “Using multiple pumps, up to 20,000 tons or more of oil per day can be pumped from a distressed tanker. In many cases, too, prompt lightening of a grounded ship enables it to be freed before wave action ruptures the hull, resulting in' a major uncontrolled oil spill,” Glennon added. fay PX* Mf isrZty and Quality Set-aside Provisions Stronger —''7 ~~ Agwaywill ** _ your oil heating system a new heart for only^^^^ You're burningupmof'yfci.crv winter if your oil burner won’t hold its tune, needs IL Q constant repairs, frequent service.
