Penn State Scientists
Report Dairy Advance
Food scientists at The Penn
sylvania State University are the
first to determine the levels of
various fat-protein particles
called lipoproteins circulating in
cows blood during lactation and
pregnancy. The findings were
reported Thursday during the
annual meeting of the American
Dairy Science Association at
Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University,
Blacksburg, Va.
The investigations showed that
the very low density lipoproteins
carry fat in the blood to the
mammary gland during lactation
or milk secretion periods. The
research is the work of Dr.
Barbara C. Raphael and Dr. Paul
S. Dimick of the Department of
Dairy Science at Penn State.
Milk production and fat
associated with lipoproteins
increase to a peak as the process
of yielding milk accelerates
within the mammary gland, they
explained. Then both decline
gradually during the remainder
of the lactation period.
By examining blood
, lipoproteins, one can look at the
source of milk fat and also gain
valuable insight mto the role the
lipoproteins play within the body,
they stated. Such studies also aid
in a better understanding of the

interrelationships between
circulating fat and heart and
liver disease.
The very low density
lipoproteins, one of four major
classes, exist in cow’s blood in
low concentrations during milk
production since they are
removed rapidly by the mam
mary gland, Dr Raphael pointed
out. On the other hand, these
lipoproteins increase sharply in
the blood when the cow is not
producing milk—since the need
for fat in milk synthesis has
stopped.
This week-old pig’s stomach is exactly this size. The
little dry feed it takes to fill this tiny “fuel tank” must
be LOADED WITH POWER!
Purina Pig Starters
give your pigs EXTRA
for about ‘/sQ per day
It takes mighty little dry feed and sow’s milk to fill the
tiny “fuel tank” of a baby pig from the time he’s a week
old until he’s three weeks old. An average of about an
ounce a day of loaded-with-power Purina Baby Pig Chow
or Purina Early Weaning Chow is all it takes to give him
extra energy, fast growth and disease protection.
This extra protection during this critical period costs
about Vz cent per pig per day! That’s low-cost insurance
to provide pigs with the “built-in” livability, the grow
and go power, offered by Purina starters.
Pigs love Purina Baby Pig Chow and Purina Early Weaning
Chow, too—and that’s important, for it makes no differ
ence how great a pig starter may be, if pigs won’t eat it.
Let us help you get your pigs off to a thrifty start with
Purina Baby Pig Chow or Purina Early Weaning Chow.

To Secure Permit For
Farm Ponds
The proper management of the
farm pond requires some at
tention at this time of the year.
Many pond owners report heavy
growth of algae and various pond
weeds. These are very difficult to
control with the rapid turnover of
the water in the pond. Before the
pond may legally be treated to
eliminate these problems a
permit should be obtained from
the Pennsylvania Fish Com
mission. Applications are
available at our Extension Office
for this permit. The name of the
chemical must be mentioned and
approved before the pond should
be treated. Farm pond owners
are urged to secure this permit
and not take the risk of treatment
without permission
refection
