6—Lancaster Farming. Saturday, July 29, 1972 Pa. Grange Notes The Pennsylvania State Grange, founded September 18, 1873, in Reading, wUI celebrate its centennial with a statewide year-long observance under the chairmanship of Miss Mildred Shultz, Somerset, State Master A. Wayne Readinger announced this week. Miss Shultz will head a 15- member committee of grange leaders from as many different areas of the state. Readinger indicated they will develop a program to highlight grange service during the past 100 years and to contemplate future needs and ways to meet them. Readinger said the Grange, a non-profit service organization, has directed its major energies toward developing a strong agriculture, better living con ditions and wholesome family life throughout the state. Improved highways, better public schools and articulate rural leadership have been among specific ob jectives. Prior to formation of the state unit, grange work made its debut in the state in March, 1871, with the establishment of Eagle PURINA HORSE CHOWS g for the good of your horse, anywhere... trailering, showing, or just at home. There's complete Horse Chow Checkers, with the hay built right into the pellets. Or long time favorite Omolene, to feed if you have plenty of good hay available. Or Big'Un, that’ll help grow your foals big, fast. Or Breeding Horse Chow, to help peak condition your mares and stallions. Or Horse Block, when pasture's sparse. Or Horse-Plus, for that extra boost and bloom. They've all been developed and proven on our horses at the Purina Horse Research Center, so you can have confidence in our growing family of good things for your horses. Drop in and "talk horse" next time you see the red and white Checkerboard. John J. Hess, 11, Inc. Ph: 442-4632 Paradise West Willow Farmers Assn., Inc. John B. Kurtz Ph; 354-9251 R. Designed for the whole family, the Grange was the first major institution of its kind to give equal recognition to both men and women and placed the home on equal footing with the business enterprises that support it, ac cording to Readinger. Its service record for the public good, Readinger stated, accounts for its long and continuous history, in contrast with some 500 other farm organizations that flourished for a time but are no longer in existence. Because Pennsylavnia was organized for grange work soon after formation of the National Grange (in 1867) it was able in the early years to give the parent body strong support in major programs, such as freight rate regulation, mail service, and a better system of public education, all of which were lational in scope.
