    10—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 24, 1972
Congratulations and best wishes for a
successful year are certainly in order for
our new Lancaster County Dairy Princess.
She is Donna Jean Book, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy A. Book, Ronks RDI.
The Book’s are well-known m Lancaster
County Holstein circles.
Being named Lancaster County Dairy
This July 4th marks 196 years since the
initial Independence Day of 1776 when our
forefathers adopted the Declaration of
Independence and launched the United
States of America as a free and in
dependent nation. This is not long in the
history of nations. Yet, many of us seem
already to have forgotten some of the basic
tenets upon which our country is based.
We hear those who demand their rights
without bothering to exercise respon
sibility and ask for the fruits of labor
Lead-time is the interval between the
planning and the completion of a project.
The more complicated the project the
longer the lead-time. With respect to
energy, a great many people act as if the
factor of lead-time did not exist--that an
oil well can be discovered and brought
into production with the dispatch of
establishing a popcorn stand.
The president of a leading oil com pany
has warned of the growing menace of the
lead-time factor in meeting future
energy needs. He says the United States
is simply not “keeping up with the
game” in finding new sources of oil and
gas, constructing new refineries, deep
water terminals and pipelines. By 1960,
he declares, the U S will need additional
manufacturing capacity equivalent to 58
medium-sized refineries, yet only one is
currently under construction.
Congress ms on the threshold of
another mandatbry increase in the
federal minimum wage. But raising the
minimum wage 'is an empty gesture so
far as the untrained and unskilled people
walking the streets looking for a job are
concerned. As the minimum wage rises,
certain types of unemployment increase
as employers find they can no longer
afford to pay artificially high wages to
those unqualified for the jobs that need to
be filled
Nevertheless, despite its inflation
breeding, job-killing propensities, a
sharp increase m the mandatory
minimum wage is virtually certain.
Equally certain is the disruptive impact
it will have on the stabilization program.
A 25 percent increase in the minimum
wage should be accompanied by ad
justments in the rate of other employees
who are now above the minimum and
whose pay rate is related to the

Lead-Time-A Growing Shadow
A Realistic Solution
Princess in competition at the Farm and
Home Center last week was a particular
honor because of the caliber of com
petition. We think the judges were right in
stating that any one of the 12 contestants
would have made a fine representative for
the Lancaster County dairy industry.
Again, our congratulations to the new
dairy princess.
without working and honor without per
severance and a willingness to stand on
principle. It is time that a respectful salute
to a passing U.S. Flag came back in style.
Let July 4,1972, serve as a reminder to
each of us that the ideals of freedom,
liberty and justice, upon which this nation
was founded, are not to be taken lightly.
They remain now, as always, the pillars of
our strength. But, they are only as strong
as they are secure in our hearts.
Developing oil fields, building refineries,
tankers and pipelines requires years. In
fact, as the oil company executive
stresses, “it takes from between two to
ten years to fully develop a major oil
field.” During the past 10 years, the
number of oil wells drilled in the U. S. has
dropped 40per cent. Everyday’s delay in
reversing this trend increases the lead
time that is casting an ever-longer shadow
over the prospect of meeting future energy
needs. In the petroleum
industry, the oil company official warns
that reversal of the trend,” . . . will only
be forthcoming if there is a totally dif
ferent public attitude towards drilling
and an economic climate encouraging
risk investment.”'
That harmless sounding expression--
lead-time-could be the Achilles’ heel of our
energy-based civilization. Our people had
better wake up and learn what it means.
minimum. Proper and justified dif
ferentials should be retained, but this
will not be possible if adjustments above
the minimum are subjected to a 5.5
percent ceiling. Since retailers operate
on extremely narrow profit margins a
congressionaly mandated increase in
wages must be offset by price ad
justments.
In anticipation of a substantially
higher minimum wage, a measure has
been introduced in Congress called the
“Fairness Amendment”. It requires that
if the minimum wage is increased there
must be reasonable relief given by the
Pay Board and the Price Commission so
that increases in payroll costs can be
recovered by price increases. The Fairness
Amendment provides a realistic solution to
the impossible arithmetic of price
stabilization and rising minimum wage
requirements.

To Have Stand-by Generator
Farmers with large
mechanical operation depending
upon electricity for power should
have some emergency source of
electricity. We are often warned
by the power companies of
possible shortages of electricity
in case of extreme hot weather
for any length of time. This same
outfit can be used in case of
severe storms during both
summer and winter. Automatic
feeding systems, milking
machines, water pumps, and
many other vital machines must
be operated and must have
electricity. Farmers are urged to
obtain emergency generators
that can be operated by a tractor
or gasoline engine that will make
it possible to continue operations.
To Provide Fresh Water
Fresh water at all times is very,
important for efficient produc
tion at all times of the year but is
extremely important during the
hot, humid summer months.
Many animals that are confined
must have water in order to
survive. Some animals such as
swine may not be able to live
through extreme heat periods
without ample water for intake as
well as spraying into the pens.
Some heavy producing dairy
cows may drink as much as 30
gallons of water per day and may
come to the water trough or bowl
eight to 10 times in any 24-hour
period. Animals on pasture
should have free access to water
at all times and should be easy
for them to reach; protection
from the hot sun will keep the
water supply cooler and livestock
will consume more of it. Liberal
intake of water is very important
in efficient nroduction.
WHAT IS
‘SECURITY’?
Lesson for June 25, 1972
■eckgreund Scripture Psalms 57, 90
13-17, Isaiah 6 1-6, Romans 8 21-
39
Dtvetienal Reading Psalms 90 13-17,
“All I want is security.”
This was the answer given to
me by a man whom I had asked,
“What do you want out of life?”
His answer was not surprising;
many people today would say the
same thing. They want security
above all else.
The problem is:
what is security?
A place to hide
For some peo
ple, security
means a place to
hide, shelter from
Rev Althmise the P roblems - COn-
KCV. Aithousc cerns and dan
gers that confront us in life.
For them, Christianity often
turns out to be a great disap
pointment, for they find that it
does not hide them from these
things. The epitome of this atti
tude is the man or woman lying
in a' hospital bed and protesting
“What did I ever do to deserve
this?”
What they have overlooked
along the way is the fact that
Christianity never promises to
give us a place to hide from life’s
storms. They forget that Jesus
himself did not finish his life in
To Beware of VEE in Horaet
Last summer in Texas and
Oklahoma an outbreak of
Venezuelan Equine En
cephalomyelitis, commonly
known as sleeping sickness in
horses and named VEE in every
day language, caused severe
losses in that part of the country
and brought about a mass vac
cination program. To the best of
our knowledge there has not been
an outbreak in this country yet
this summer. However, there is
danger of such an outbreak and
every precaution should be taken
to prevent the spread of this
disease. The private vaccination
of horses, mules, and ponies is
available from the local
veterinarians. Horses that are
transported to shows, sales, and
public events should be vac
cinated in order to reduce the
danger of infection. Some states
require all horses to be vac
cinated. Local horse owners are
urged to give this program some
thought and perhaps discuss it
with their local veterinarian.
To Practice Good Management
Today’s farmer must give
some attention to good farm
management if he is going to be
successful. This is important
from his own financial standpoint
and also, from the environmental
aspect in the community. Farm
producers must realize the
growing pressure to reduce both
water and air pollution; both
public officials and the general
public are quite active in this
area and will report many
pollution practices that the
farmer may have to defend. We
realize that many of these may
not be justified and may not hold
up if taken to court. However, I’m
sure that the farmer will have a
much stronger case if he is a good
fanner, a good manager, and one
that practices the best known
methods of sanitation.
a snug little hide-away, but on
the cross.
When the psalmist cries: “ . .
for in thee my soul takes refuge,
in the shadow of thy wings I will
take refuge, till the storms of
destruction pass by” (57:1), we
can be sympathetic. It is human
to want to hide, but he is much
closer to the facts of life when he
says- “I lie in the midst of lions
that greedily devour the sons of
men . . .” (57.4). God has not
hidden him from dangers of life,
but he has given him security in
the midst of them, so that, sui
rounded by evil on all sides, the
psalmist still manages to sing
“Be exalted, 0 God, above the
heavens' Let thy glory be over
all the earth” (57:5)
“In the midst of lions''
This is the true security that
God offers his children The
psalmist began with a pleading
cry for escape, but he ends up
extolling the goodness of God
even while he is in the midst of
great danger. I once heard a man
ask “It will be a miracle if I
come out of this all right and
I’m frightened to death. How can
I pray?” The answer he was
given: “Don’t concentrate on
your problem, ]ust praise God
and thank him for his goodness ”
What is security? It is not a
gilt-edged guarantee from God
that we will not have to face dan
ger and testing along the way. It
is the confidence with which Paul
wrote to the Romans; “I am sure
that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor principalities, nor
things present, nor things to
come, nor powers, nor height,-nor
depth, nor anything else in all
creation, will be able to separate
us from the love of God in Christ
Jesus our Lord: (8:38-39).
