Wanner, a Lan caster County native, has been appointed editor of Lancaster Farming. Wanner was once an associate editor with The Poultryman in Vineland, N.J., and has held advertising and public relations posts locally with New Holland Division of Sperry Rand and Armstrong Cork Co. He is married to the former Judy Kulp of Ephrata. The Wanners have two children and live in Akron. The Lancaster County Dairy Princess Committee this week announced twelve contestants for the Lancaster County Dairy Princess Pageant June 15 at the Farm and Home Center. The contestants are: Donna Welk, Veronica Bare, Karen Overly, Judith Wilson, Brenda Kreider, Raelene Harbold, Donna Book, Carol Kettering, Patti Baltozer, Janet Stoltzfus, Rhoda Stauffer, and Sharon Kreider. Patti Baltozer A dairy bar reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. proceeding the pageant June 15. Tickets are available at the Lancaster County Extension office, from Curly Brantly, Atlantic Breeders, or Jay Landis, co-chairmen of the ticket com mittee, or from any pageant committee member. Carol Kettering A dessert party and briefing meeting will be held for con testants and their Mothers on June 7. She is active in the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg and the Youth Fellowship. Miss Veronica Bare, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bare, 419 Mt. Sidney Road, Witmer, is a senior at Conestoga Valley High School. She was active in the Crafts and Ceramics Club as well as a 4-H Foods and Sewing Club. A member of Stumptown Mennonite Church, she is also a member of the church youth group. Miss Karen Overly, 17, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Overly, Quarryville RDI. A junior at Solanco High School, she is a member of the'school tennis team and the Future Homemakers of America. A Fulton Grange member, she is also active in the Little Britian Presbyterian Church. Miss Judith Wilson, 17, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilson, Nottingham RD2. A junior at Solanco High School, she is in the high school band. She is also a member of the Penn sylvania Flying Farmers. She is on producing top-quality hay and haylage Don Hershey, Manheim RD2, is the guiding force behind the project Hershey is vice president of Young Farmers Region 2, and chairman of that organization’s education com mittee Hershey said that no one really knows enough about alfalfa management. There are no definite guidelines on exactly when to cut, fertilize and plant to get maximum value for every dollar invested in time -and materials. This is a problem Hershey hopes will be solved with the cooperation of area Young Farmers, vo-ag teachers and Penn state researchers. The vo ag teachers involved are; Charles AcHey, Ephrata; Michael Burton, Penn Manor; Jess Erway, Manheim Central; and Donald Robinson, Garden Spot. Dr. Glenn Stevens and Bill Williams at Penn State are arranging for some of the project tests. Extensive records will be maintained by the Young Far mers for each alfalfa stand in volved in the study. Details will be recorded on seeding, fer tilizing, cutting, cultivation, previous crops, pesticides, liming active in the Little Bntian Presbyterian Church and the choir. Miss Brenda K. Kreider, 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs. J Floyd Kreider, Mount Joy RD2, is a member of the Lancaster County 4-H Holstein Club. The sample will be used as part of an exhaustive study of alfalfa management. and so forth Intervals between cuttings will be recorded along with tonnages harvested from each cutting At each cutting, one of the instructors will measure the yield per acre. Cores will be taken from sample bales and tested for moisture content. The cores will then be sent to Penn State where they will be analyzed for TDN (totally digestible nutrients), DP (digestible protein), fiber and net energy content The study has just started and is expected to continue for a number of years. A mountain of data should accumulate during the course of the study.
