New Museum Features
Eggs and Seashells
Over 100,000 sets com
prising the largest egg col
lection in the world, are
housed in the newly opened
multi-milhon-dollar Delaware
Museum of Natural History
in Greenville, near Wilming
ton, Del.
Conceived by John E. du
Pont in 1957, the museum is
a repository for eggs accu
mulated from older collec
tions around the world. It
also features collections of
rare seashells, birds and
mammals.
The museum’s research
collection comprises one mil
lion seashells, ami 40,000
specimens of birds, including
many extinct and vanishing
species, besides the egg col
lection.
Mr, du Pont said that the
work of the museum’s re
searchers in the past two
years has shed new light on
how man has harmed his nat

must do in order to preserve
them

methods used to determine
forage quality. Such forages are
produced in management and
breeding experiments by
scientists with the Regional
Pasture Research Laboratory of
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, located at Penn
State.
Indirect methods of estimating
forage quality include chemical
analysis, the artificial rumen
technique, and feeding of forage
diets to small laboratory animals
such as the meadow vole—a
mouse-like rodent..
The meadow vole will be
exhibited. Such trials enable
scientists to discard low quality
forages found unsuitable with
small, inexpensive laboratory
animals. Then the most
promising forage varieties are
evaluated in the more expensive
experiments using livestock.
One of the studies at the USDA
Pasture Research Laboratory
has determined that the sugar
content of grasses is highest in
early spring and autumn, and
lowest in July. From this sugar
content animals obtain a portion
of their energy requirements. As
the grasses matured, the energy
levels in the forages likewise
decreased.
As a result of these findings,
Pasture Laboratory scientists
are working to increase the sugar
content of forages for livestock.
The same energy levels were
also found to decrease when
nitrogen levels were increased.
The decrease in the energy level

in the spring was more rapid in
tall fescue and reed canarygrass
than in smooth bromegrass and
perennial ryegrass.
Other studies are attempting to
increase energy levels from
fiber, alter mineral content, and
eliminate toxic factors from
forage crops.
The June 28 Agronomy Field
Day at Rock Springs will feature
two wagon tours of crops
research. The program will be a
day-long event. To see
everything, plan to take one tour
at 9:30 a.m. and the other at 1:30
p.m., suggests Dr. Joseph D.
Harrington, general chairman.
The Agronomy Research Farm is
three miles west of Pine Grove
Mills on Route 45.

OUR APPROACH TO QUALITY IN DAIRY FEEDS
1. Formulation Control
a. requirements determined by our own research.
b. computer selected ingredients to meet those
requirements.
1. not least cost formulation
c. current and legal registrations and tag.
2. Incoming Ingredients
a. sample every one before unloading.
b. maintain quality records on each supplier,
(they really hate us for that)
3. Quality Production
a. precise mixing procedure on vitamins
minerals.
b. close tolerances on all ingredients.
4. Quality of finished product
a. visual inspection.
b. correct identification.
c. lab analysis.
d. flushing between feeds.
Quality control is a way of life with us, not simply a
program.

QUALITY
Ortho Unipel STARTER SPECIAL.
A starter? As a “pop-up"? It has to be special.
It is. STARTER SPECIAL is a completely unique product.
Here’s why:
- Physical Uniformity. STARTER SPECIAL pellets are made
to the same shape and density for maximum consistency and
control in application.
- Chemical Uniformity. Each and every STARTER SPECIAL
pellet has all three primary nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus,
potassium - chemically homogenized m precisely the most
desirable ratio. 13-34-10 The nutrients can’t separate or
segregate during handling as with troublesome, hard-to
regulate “dry blends."
- Double Duty Nutrients STARTER SPECIAL has both
quick-acting and long-lasting nitrogen and phosphorus for
thorough plant feeding. There is no urea or diammonium
phosphate that might endanger the seed through liberation
of free ammonia.
Of course, these features also make it highly effective as
a banded starter. But. with only slight adaptation of most
planters, it can be applied directly with the seed in exacting
measurement for safety and maximum response.
With this kind of control, you apply much less material
only 1/3 the amount needed for banding And the reduced
material handling could cut your planting time in half!
So, save time, trouble, and money at planting time. See us
soon about applying STARTER SPECIAL this spring as a
d«y "pop-up".
it is easier to take a nine

turn a seven-inch pie plate
(with a few holes punched in
it) upside down in the larger
one. Put your steak on top
and the fat runs down into
the nine-inch pan and is
trapped, thus eliminating the
splatter of grease in the
oven.
