Surveys by the Pennsylvania
Department of Agriculture in
dicate that the leaf-eating tent
caterpillars have hatched from
their eggs and are now moving
into the trees.
At this stage the insect is
vulnerable, said McHale, who
urged property owners to spray
their trees
By about the second to third
week in May, said McHale, the
caterpillars will be in their
familiar tent cacoons and harder
to destroy by chemical sprays
The tent cataerpillar, not to be
confused with the gypsy moth,
infests fruit and ornamental
flowering trees, feeding on their
leaves If the trees are defoliated
for two or three consecutive
seasons they can be killed

The population curve of- these
caterpillars is cyclical, explained
Henry Nixon, the department’s
director of plant industry. “At its
peak,” said Nixon, “caterpillars
become an extreme nuisance tc
homeowners, overrunning tlu
walls of houses.”
Damage by tent caterpillars
last year was considered ex
tensive. said Nixon.
United States honey production
was down last year. At 206,326,000
pounds, it was 11 per cent below
the 1970 output The USDA points
to a decline in the number of bee
colonies, plus a lower yield of
honey per colony, as the factors
contributing to the lower
production

Certainly Lasso" gets
giant foxtail and
lots more grasses.
Lots of broadleaf s, too
Weeds like giant foxtail growing
in com or soybeans mean nutrients
and moisture going to waste. Your
crops have to grow with "left
overs."
To give your com or beans the
"full course" they need, apply
Lasso liquid or granules. To take
care of grasses like giant foxtail,
yellow and green foxtail, and
others. And to control many broad
leafs, too.
Lasso leaves no carryover to inter
fere with crop rotation plans, either.
Even if you go to fall planted small
grains.
That's what you expect from your herbicide.
