The average yearly storage
cost for a bushel of grain in
commercial elevators in the
coming marketing season is
expected to rise nine per cent
over 1970-71 for inland and port
terminals and eight per cent at
country elevators, according to a
report issued by the U S
Department of Agriculture.

USDA’s Economic Research
Service found that although the
estimated average occupancy at
elevators is projected higher in
1972-73, it won’t be sufficient to
offset increased input costs.
The combined cost for handling
and storing grain at country
elevators is estimated at 21.5
cents per bushel for next season.

Meat Label Deadline
Extension Clarified
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture clarified its recent
extension of a deadline to allow
meat processors to exhaust
current stocks of certain product
labels.
USDA officials said that the
extension, granted to processors
on an individual label basis, will
give a processor until September
1 to use up his stocks of that
label.
Officials said some people
affected by the extension,
originally announced March 30,
apparently interpreted the an
nouncement to mean that they
had until September 1 to apply for
an extension.
The extension applies to labels
which do not meet Federal
requirements which became
mandatory April 1 on the size and
location of the net weight
statement, the declaration of

To receive an extension,
processors must show that they
bought the labels before
November 1,1971, and must give
USDA a complete inventory of
their labeling stocks on hand as of
April 1, 1972. Processors wishing
an extension should contact the
Labels and Packaging Staff,
Technical Services, Animal and
Plant Health Inspection Service,
USDA, Washinton, D.C. 20250
USDA must approve before use
labels for all Federally inspected
meat products, to see that they
are informative and truthful and
accurately represent the contents
of the package.
