It may be just a matter of time before America goes “metric” and does its talking and figuring in terms of kilograms, meters, and centimeters instead of pounds, yards, and inches. The United States is the last industrialized nation not to commit itself fully to the adoption of the metric system The National Bureau of Standards of the Department of Commerce has recently recommended FEEDER PIG SALE 600 HEAD SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1972 On the premises off Route 23, one mile North of Goodville, East Earl Twp. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 1,1972 — nationwide conversion from our present English system of weights and measures to the metric system Extension home management specialists at Penn State point out that metrication has already been adopted by some portions of American life Every time you buy a light bulb or pay an electric bill, you go metric The watt, volt and kilowatt-hour are all metric units The pharmaceutical in- dustry went almost completely metric 15 years ago. Many American businesses use the metric system in connection with their export operations Government agencies are beginning to use metric units outside their research labs. Owners of foreign-made cars can virtually take the cars’ metric nature for granted A recent issue of a well-known commercial pattern book carried measurements and yardage requirements in inches and yards and in centimeters and meters There are many reasons given for the proposed change from the English sytem to the metric system That the English system is cumbersome is just one of them The English system grew out of a process of tradition and folklore, rather than from silence The inch was standarized centures ago as being the length of three-well-dried barley corns from the middle of the ear, laid end to end. A yard was the distance from the tip of the nose to the tip of the middle finger on the outstretched arm of King Edgar. By international agreement, the metric units in use today are defined in terms of the most unvarying physical phenomena that can be precisely measured. It will take some time and education for those of us who have spent lifetimes buying by the pound, square feet, linear rods and other quantities to become adjusted to the meter, liter and gram. But a switch to the metric system won’t be all that difficult PUBLIC SALE REGISTER (Continued from Page 32) MON. APRIL 24 and TUBS.
