We’ll help you “solve” the litter problem. LET US HELP YOU PUT IT ALL TOGETHER inspection —Whereas Pennsylvania is a large egg producing state with a hen population of over 16 million layers. —Whereas of September 1970 there were 45 Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture licensed plants. —Whereas the USDA requirements for pasteurization require an investment of ap proximately $lOO,OOO which is not economically sound for the family farm operator. —And Whereas the “egg breakout plants” licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture were producing wholesome food. Reports show their bacteria count was a lot lower than minimum requirements established by USDA and there was not a single case of salmonella. —Now, therefore, be it resolved that the USDA amend their regulations to make it possible for these plants to get back into production of liquid eggs for intra-state sales. This will eleviate an economic hardship to the Pennsylvania poultry in dustry and will also make wholesome ingredients available to many small bakeries in Pennsylvania. Currently there are only six “breakout” operations that can meet current USDA requirements in Penn sylvania and it is impractical for the family farm to transport “breakout eggs” to these few licensed operators The expense of transporting these eggs is too great at the price offered for them to make it economically feasible. The end result will only end in higher food prices without any improvements in wholesomeness. Since the Ph. 354-5168 Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 1,1972 Pennsylvania licensed “breakout plant” reports have conclusively proven to be very satisfactory and within the established requirements be changed.
