Tractor Manufacturer Reduces "Noise Pollution" At a time when the American public is showing increased awareness of man and his ev nironment, tractor manufac turers have taken it upon themselves to reduce noise at the operation’s station. Latest hard evidence of their success is the new line of In ternational Harvester tractors which have recorded the lowest noise level and quietest cab ever tested. These recent tests record as low as 85.5 dB(A) in IH’s new V « " -«.v >- *•**■ vS?KSS*3SK3®®S® ALLIS-CHALMERS Custom blade spacing lets you match harrow to soil conditions Fine cut—7s4" front, 754" rear Medium cut—Bs4" front, 754" rear Tough cut—Bs4" front, 854" rear. Choice of 18", 20" and 22" blada diamatars to match your discing needs. Choice of 10, 8 and 7-gauga blade thicknesses gives you the strength you need for your soil conditions Back-up plates on alt blades provide extra strength near the spool to combat breakage and rock damage while leaving razor sharp edges for cutting Outer gang blades are 2" less in diameter than other blades to leave a level, finished field surface Adjustable gangs are simple to move to the discing angle you need for a smooth, level seedbed in any soil Heavy weight per blade-approximately 75 lbs—helps harrow penetrate deep and cut clean Heavy-duty bearing brackets soak up shock last for years under normal conditions Parallel lift gives you the ground clearance you need to transport a wide disc harrow cab with the tractor at full load. In some cases, the current model tractor with new cab has resulted in as much as 40 to 50 per cent reduction in subjective loudness at the operator’s station. This is quite an achievement when you consider the variety of noise sources in a tractor and the interaction of one on the others. Designing an acoustically quiet tractor cab is in many respects as difficult as designing an acoustically perfect auditorium. Both require a combination of science and art. Such a com bination went into the sound engineering program for IH’s 66 series cab. Polyurethane foam, and dense contour molded rubber blanket material were used for interior upholstery along with rubber mounted glass windows and spray-on acrylics with several times the damping efficiency of auto undercoat to obtain a truly significant reduction of sound and resultant operator fatigue. And tight gasketing around doors, foot pedals, and control console reduce exposure to air borne noise. Actually, the industry’s efforts to deaden tractor sounds were given a momentary setback several years ago, when cabs became popular. Early cabs usually raised the noise level at the operator station and the in troduction of protective cabs compounded the engineering problems of reducing sound levels. But your cows may have the bred-in capacity to produce an extra ton of milk a year— with the proper diet. That proper diet is Purina Milk Chow Special. It's a high efficiency milking ration that contains carefully selected ingredients blended together in the right amounts to help your cows produce all that’s in them. Start feeding your dairy cows Purina Milk Chow Special and keep an eye on your records. Prove to yourself that this high efficiency ration can return you lots of milk at remarkably low cost. In fact, many local dairymen report increases of over 2,000 lbs. milk per cow m their first year on Milk Chow Special. Stop in and see us today. We’ll give you the details on prices and delivery. D. 3, Ephfata attacked the noise and protection factors as one. First efforts to solve the problem were aimed at the high noise peaks. Double-pass muf flers replaced single-pass to take care of perhaps the most obvious noise source—exhaust. From this beginning, an in creasingly more scientific ap proach to reduce the noise evolved for application to the new IH tractors. Simulating actual operating conditions, the engineers used magnetic vibrators to feed sound inducting vibrations from the source to the cab structure and, with ac celerometers, traced the flow paths through it to their respective sounding boards. In this manner, a bare safety frame and then a complete cab were force vibrated and analyzed in the laboratory as a basis for instituting measures to interrupt flow paths or to deaden sounding boards. These developments were then further verified in the field with tractors under severe working conditions. IT'S CALLED SPECIAL Ira B. Landis Ph: 394-7912 1912 Creek Hill Rd., Lane. Inc.
