A nationwide vaccination plan was recommended to USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Service (APHS) by six internationally known poultry scientists. These science advisors say that currently available licensed vaccines against the domestic strain of the disease should ef fectively protect birds against the exotic Newcastle disease strain if properly applied and monitored. The plan carries special provisions for poultry in quarantine areas, where there are active outbreaks, and other areas, where the disease is a threat but not an immediate problem. Currently, an active outbreak of exotic Newcastle is centered in the San Bernardino Valley area of southern California. Since December, APHS officials have diagnosed the disease in poultry and pet bird flocks containing approximately 1.5 million birds. Southern California’s chicken and turkey population numbers more than 57 million birds. Parts of New Mexico and Texas—and all of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico—are under quarantine because of previous outbreaks. The science advisors say in dividual vaccination provides the best protection. Vaccine ap plication should be supervised and a seriological test used to monitor the effects. The recommendations were made by poultry disease experts: Dr. Benjamin S. Pomeroy, University of Minnesota; Dr. Robert P. Hanson, University of Wisconsin; Dr. Steven B. Hit- Leland C. Grumbles, Texas A&M University; Dr. R. A. Bankowski, University of California; and Dr. Harry Goldstein, Mhio Depart ment of Agriculture, ment of Agriculture. APHS officials say that high risk areas are those areas under quarantine or immediately ad jacent to quarantine areas. They also note that in all instances, vaccine manufacturers’ in structions should be followed regarding application of vac cines. XXX On a budget? Then milk is one of your best food buys.
