Soil as Waste
Disposal System
Pollution problems associated
with the soil and its water content,
occur mainly because we have no
socially or economically ac
ceptable ways to correct the
situation, Dr. Milford R. Hed
dleson, professor of agronomy
extension at Pennsylvania State
University, points out.
Speaking to educators and
industry representatives at the
annual Lime and Fertilizer
Conference recently, Dr. Hed-

PIG STARTERS
FOLKS ARE FINDING OUT that Purina starters truly give pigs
the fast, right start hogmen want and look for.
LOADED WITH POWER. Purina pig starters give baby pigs quick
energy, fast growth, extra disease protection ... and they sup
ply vital nutrients the sow’s milk may lack.
EXTRA PALATABLE. Most important of all, pigs really go for
Purina starters. They become enthusiastic "early, eager eaters".
PURINA STARTERS—Baby Pig Chow, Early Weaning Chow, and
Pig Startena—offer pigs “built-in" livability and grow power
to get them off to a fast, thrifty start.

dleson said “fortunately nature
has provided built-in
mechanisms that enable the soil
to dispose of unwanted materials
but we must devote time and
direct resources in improving
this efficiency.”
Both bacteria and fungi that
are present in the soil surface
area rapidly break down organic
wastes in an aerobic en
vironment, • the Penn State
specialist emphasized. This is
both a normal soil building and a
waste destruction process being
carried on simultaneously.
“Since soils are pretty much
self-rejuvenated with time, it
would seem most practical to
speed up studies in this area,” he
said. “If we are going to ac
commodate the growing volume
of wastes, we must devise ways
of using the soil as an efficient
disposal medium which will
reduce water pollution hazards
as well.”
