Eshleman recntly announced the results of his most recent poll. Eshleman distributed the poll in January as a part of his newsletter and also had the cooperation of several newspapers in his District who published the questionnaire so that their readers could register their opinions with the 16th District Representative. Eshleman said that he was pleased that over 800 people clipped the questionnaire out of local newspapers and sent it to him. “I think these numbers show how important the cooperation of the newspapers is to the success of this effort,” he said. “It also indicates that the format used by most newspapers who ran the poll was conducive to people clipping it out and mailing it to me.” Eshleman said that the return rate on the questionnaires sent with his newsletter was about 15 percent. In all Eshleman mailed out about 7,500 newsleters. “That’s higher than the national average,” he said, “and tells me that there continues to be a better than average interest in national affairs in the 16th District.” The poll results in percentages were as follows: 1. Energy and Ecology Needs Should Balance “The country must avoid an ‘environmental protec tion overkill' which could stall the expansion of en ergy plants," Walter Rogers, president of the Indepen dent Natural Gas Associa tion, asserted in a year-end statement. He said that the United States is entering a period when it will have to balance its environmental needs against its energy require ments. Confronted with soaring demands, Mr. Rogers said the industry must increase our efforts to find and develop new domestic sources of natural gas and other en ergy. The environmental prob lems associated with pro duction of energy should be met and solved quickly, “without undue delay or prolonged public debate," Rogers concluded.
