Compared with last week’s
close a midweek price upturn
partially offset the sharp declines
enforced on the weeks opening
session but closing prices on
slaughter steers and heifers were
still weak to 50 lower. Cows
closed steady to 25 lower. Bulls
were fully steady through mid
week but closed 50-1.00 lower.
Feeder cattle sold 25-50 lower
early with the decline largely the
reflection of the lower trend on
slaughter cattle.
Four day receipts 15,700 as
compared 19,700 previous week
and 19,000 a year ago. Slaughter
steers made up a strong 40
percent and heifers 34 percent
with a large volume Good to
Average Choice. Cows comprised
10 percent, and feeders 11 per
cent. The fed cattle trade con
tinued to follow an erratic course
with weekly closing prices
alternately higher and lower over
the past six week period. Despite
a modest Monday supply, buyers
took a determined stand on the
early rounds to effect a
reasonable ratio between live
prices and sharply lowered
carcass quotations. However,
most interests were scrambling
for numbers at midweek as a
result of some price recovery on
carcass beef and two days of
curtailed marketings.
Average cost slaughter steers
first three days 34.76 average
weight 1118 pounds as compared
35.90 and 1118 pounds previous
week and 31.15 and 1146 pounds a
year ago.
