February 19, 1972 26 Just Lite the One Mrs. Wiley Wears How to Make a Hand Crocheted Cape Editor’s Note: One the women’s page of our January 22, 1972 issue Mrs. Clayton Wiley, Peach Bottom RD2, was wearing a hand crocheted cape of an unusual design. Many ladies have been asking for the directions to make it, so we are printing them for you. Before you start your cape, it is most important that you make a 4” x 4” gauge sample. If after you have worked the sample and it is smaller than 4” x 4”, either work looser or use a size larger crochet hook until the gauge is reached. If your sample is larger than 4” x 4”, either tighten your tension or use a size smaller hook until the gauge is reached. Any yam which works into the gauge given may be substituted, however; material requirements may vary slightly depending upon the yam you choose. Size (Large) and misses 14-18 or 40 6 buttoms required Material 4-ply knitting worsted Quantity in 2 colors 12 oz. light color 12 oz. dark color Crochet Hook No. 8 OR H plastic OR Aluminum Working in pattern GAUGE sitich (1 dc and 1 sc row) 7 dc 2 inches 14 pattern rows 6 inches. The + is used in repeating —” repeat £rom+” means to repeat everything that follows the last + Chain —ch ; Slip Stitch si st; Stitch st; Single Crochet sc; Double Crochet dc. Ist Row; Starting at neck edge, with Color 1 ch 47, (this chain should measure 13 inches without stretching), 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 3 dc in next st of chain, +1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st, repeat from + across row, end with 1 dc in each of last sts. There are 67 dc across row counting ch 3 as 1 dc. 2nd Row: Ch 2, turn, skip first dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, +1 dc m next dc, a 3- joined dc over 3 dc as follows: (yam over hook, insert hook in next st, yam over hook and through 2 loops) 3 times, yam over and pull through all 4 loops on hook, l dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from + across row, end with 1 dc in each of last 2 dc, 1 dc in top st of turning chain. 3rd Row: Ch 2, turn, skip first dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc, +1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from + across row, end with 1 dc in each of last 3 dc, do not work on top st of turning chain. 4th Row: Ch 3, turn, skip first dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc, +1 dc in each of next 7 dc, 3dc in next dc; repeat from + across row, end with 1 dc in each of last 4 dc, do not work on top of chain.
