How to Make a Hand Crocheted Cape
Editor’s Note: One the
women’s page of our January 22,
1972 issue Mrs. Clayton Wiley,
Peach Bottom RD2, was wearing
a hand crocheted cape of an
unusual design. Many ladies have
been asking for the directions to
make it, so we are printing them
for you.
Before you start your cape, it is
most important that you make a
4” x 4” gauge sample. If after you
have worked the sample and it is
smaller than 4” x 4”, either work
looser or use a size larger crochet
hook until the gauge is reached. If
your sample is larger than 4” x
4”, either tighten your tension or
use a size smaller hook until the
gauge is reached. Any yam
which works into the gauge given
may be substituted, however;
material requirements may vary
slightly depending upon the yam
you choose.

Ist Row; Starting at neck edge,
with Color 1 ch 47, (this chain
should measure 13 inches without
stretching), 1 dc in 4th st from
hook, 3 dc in next st of chain, +1
dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 dc in
next st, repeat from + across
row, end with 1 dc in each of last
sts. There are 67 dc across row
counting ch 3 as 1 dc.
2nd Row: Ch 2, turn, skip first
dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 3 dc
in next dc, +1 dc m next dc, a 3-
joined dc over 3 dc as follows:
(yam over hook, insert hook in
next st, yam over hook and
through 2 loops) 3 times, yam
over and pull through all 4 loops
on hook, l dc in next dc, 3 dc in
next dc; repeat from + across
row, end with 1 dc in each of last 2
dc, 1 dc in top st of turning chain.
3rd Row: Ch 2, turn, skip first
dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 3 dc
in next dc, +1 dc in each of next 5
sts, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from
+ across row, end with 1 dc in
each of last 3 dc, do not work on
top st of turning chain.
4th Row: Ch 3, turn, skip first
dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 3 dc
in next dc, +1 dc in each of next 7
dc, 3dc in next dc; repeat from +
across row, end with 1 dc in each
of last 4 dc, do not work on top of
chain.

closed type or armhole. Directions are given for both.
sth Row: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first
5 dc, 3sc in next dc, +1 sc in each
of next 9 dc, 3 sc in next dc;

with 1 sc in each of last 4 dc, 1 sc
in top st of turning chain.
6th Row: Turn, ch 2, working in
back loop of sts only, 1 dc in each
of next 5 sc, 3 dc in next sc, + 1 dc
in each of next 4 sc, a 3-joined dc
over next 3 dc, 1 dc in each of next
4 sc, 3 dc in next sc; repeat from
+ across row, end with l dc in
each of next 4 sc, a 2-joined dc
over last 2 sc as follows: (yam
over hook, draw up a loop in back
strand of next sc, yam over hook
and through 2 loops) twice, yam
over hook and through all 3 loops
on hook.
7th Row: Ch 1, turn, working
through both loops of sts, work 1
sc in each of first 6 sts, 3 sc in next
dc, +1 sc in each of next 11 sts, 3
sc in next dc; repeat from +
across row, end with 1 sc in each
of next 6 dc, do not work in tur
ning ch 2.
Bth Row; Turn, ch 2, working in
back loop of sts only work 1 dc in
each of next 6 sc, 3 dc in next sc,
work same as 6th row having 1
more dc on each side of each 3-
joined dc, but end with l dc in
each of next 5 sc, a 2-joined dc
over last 2 sc.
9th Row: Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc
in each st across row, do not work
over first ch 2.
10th Row: Turn, ch 2, working
in back strand of sts only, work 1
dc in each of next 6sc, 3 dc in next
sc, +1 dc in each of next 5 sc, a 3-
joined dc over next 3 sc, 1 dc in
each of next 5 sc, 3 dc in next sc,
repeat from + across row, end
with 1 dc in each of next 5 sc, a 2-
joined dc over last 2 sc.
11th Row: Same as 9th row.
12th Row: Same as 10th row.
13th Row: Ch 1, turn, skip first
2-joined dc, 1 sc in each of next 6
dc, + 3 sc in next dc, 1 sc in each
of next 13 sts; repeat from +
across row, end with 3 sc in next
dc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts, a 2-
joined sc over 2 next sts as
follows: draw up a loop in each of
next 2 sts, yam over hook and
through all 3 loops on hook; do not
work in ch 2.
14th Row: Turn, ch 2, working
in back loops of sts only, 1 dc in
each of next 6 sc, + 3 dc in next
sc, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, a 3-
joined dc over 3 sc, 1 dc in each of
next 6 sts; repeat from + across
row end with 3 dc in next sc, 1 dc
in each of next 5 sts, a 2-joined dc
over last 2 sts.
15th Row: Ch 1, turn, working
in both loops of sts, work 1 sc in
first 2-joined dc, 1 sc in each of
next 6dc, + 3 sc in next dc, 1 sc in
each of next 15 sts; repeat from
+ across row, end with 3 sc in
next center dc, 1 sc in each of
next 7 sts, do not work in turning
chain.
16th Row: Turn, ch 2, working
