absorb the natural protection in
this first milk rapidly after the
first 12 hours. Be sure they get
their first meal by nursing a
clean teat, or better yet, from a
clean pail.
Treat the naval cord as soon as
possible. Cut off the cord at about
four to six inches in length and
dip the remaining stump of the
cord in a sanitizer or disinfectant.
Prevent stress on the baby calf.
Common sense tells us to avoid
the stresses of chilling, over
feeding, exposure to improper
ventilation and general filth, but
we often find these situations.
Don’t overlook the obvious and
pay attention to details in raising
your replacements. Remember,
they are your future herd.
