the Red Rose Dairy Herd Im
provement Association at the
Farm and Home Center Tuesday,
Zimmerman and other Lancaster
County dairymen with herds
averaging more than 500 pounds
of butterfat per animal were
recognized

John P. Lapp, South Groffdale
Road, Leola RDI, whose 30 cow
herd averaged 17,143 pounds of
milk and 661 pounds of butterfat.
Zimmerman and Lapp had the
only herds listed in the annual
report with production of more
that 17,000 pounds.

butterfat. This compared to a
statewide average of 12,920
pounds of milk and 498 pounds of
butterfat.
The Lancaster County figures
were down slightly from last year
when the average output per cow
was 12,598 pounds of milk and 489
pounds of butterfat.
The number of animals in 1971
in DHIA is up more than 600 from
last year while the number of full
year herds is down by six to a
total of 411. This resulted in an
increase m the average number
of cows per herd from 44.9 in 1970
to 47.6 in 1971. The state average
in 1971 was 47 9 cows
Comparative results for the
past 30 years show that when the
testing started in 1939-40 the
average production per cow was
only 9,344 pounds of milk and 370
pounds of butterfat. This stayed
relatively stable until the mid
-1950’s
Production in 1958-59 exceeded
10.000 pounds of milk and 400
pounds ol butterfat for the first
time By 1961-62 average output
per cow had passed 11,000 pounds
ol milk and in 1963-64 it exceeded
12.000 pounds for the first time
For the past five years, the
ligures have remained relatively
stable
