' A Vol. 17 No. 9 Jaycees Give Outstanding Young Farmer Award, Max Smith Discusses Lancaster County Farming P. Robert Wenger, Quarryville RDI, was named Outstanding Young Farmer by the Quarryville Jaycees at a banquet meeting at the Willow Street Restaurant Thursday night. Wenger, 26 years old, operates a 420 acre farm three miles south of the Buck. He has 67 milking Holsteins. The farm is owned by his mother, but he has been operating it with his wife, the former Deborah Byers, for the past two years. He operated it with his father three years prior to that. Looking at a copy of a film strip "America the Beautiful” which is available to local schools and other interested persons and groups is Henry Hackman, executive assistant for the Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District. The 65-frame film shows scenes, mostly local, of conservation, including pollution, wildlife,erosion, and how local folks are working to improve the environment. The film is available by calling the district office 299-5361. Wenger describes the land as 185 acres tillable, about 85 acres of pasture land and the rest as „too hilly for farming. Wenger was selected from among 10 young farmers which were chosen by Southern Lan caster County businessmen who deal with them. All 10 were praised Thursday night as being truly outstanding in their field. J. E. Stoner, district Chevrolet manager, Harrisburg, presented Wenger with a plaque, $5O and use of a pick-up truck for two weeks. Wenger is a member of the Solanco Chapter of the Penn sylvania Young Farmers Association, the Solanco Fair Association, the National Holstein-Friesian Association, the Pennsylvania Farmers Association and formerly the FFA. Judges were Robert Bucher, Commonwealth Bank; Charles Schreiber Sr, Lancaster Production Credit and Federal Land Bank Association, and Stanley Musselman, National Central Bank, chairman. Isaac Hershey was Jaycee committee chairman in charge of the Outstanding Young Farmer award.
