Omaha Cattle
Thursday, January 13
Compared with last weeks
close, slaughter steers fully
steady, instances 25c higher
under generally broad demand.
Heifers steady to weak Cows 75c
-1.00 higher. Others strong to 50c
higher
Four day receipts 22,000 as
compared 16,400 previous week
and 24,700 a year ago Slaughter
steers approximately 38 per cent,
heifers 36 per cent, cows 12 per
cent, feeders 10 per cent, mainly
fleshy two-way steers and
heifers. Stability was keynote of
fed cattle trade despite a
moderate expansion in federally
inspected slaughter and in
creased local supplies Most
slaughterers entered week in
need of cattle for immediate
requirements and were fairly
aggressive for numbers although
somewhat selective. Good
distribution of marketings over
trading period a favorable factor.
Mud again quite prevalent and
cattle carrying a heavy coating
often sold 25 -50 c below same
grade animals which were
relatively free of mud. Feeder
buyers quite aggressive for
partly fattened steers and heifers
suitable for a short turn in
feedlot.
Average cost slaughter steers
first three days 34.71 average
weight 1,133 pounds as compared
34.21 and 1,132 pounds previous
week and 27.87 and 1,142 pounds a
year ago.
