Pa. Vegetable Conference Set Feb. 7-9
Topics of current interest to
vegetable growers and food
processor field representatives
will be presented at the 1972
Pennsylvania Vegetable Con
ference scheduled February 7 - 9
at Pennsylvania State Univer
sity
The conference, sponsored by
the Penn State College of
Agriculture, Pennsylvania
Vegetable Growers Association,
and Food Processors
Association, will be held in the

The February 7 morning
session will include such subjects
Dow Petitions
Court on 2, 4,5-T
The Dow Chemical Company
petitioned in Federal Court
recently for an order directing
William B Ruckelshaus, ad
ministrator of the Environmental
Protection Agency, to reach an
immediate decision relative to
the cancellation of the
registration for the use of the
herbicide 2,4,5-T to control weeds
in rice
Dow filed suit in U S District
Court for the Eastern District of
Arkansas asking that the court
direct Ruckelshaus to issue a
definitive order either reinstating
or cancelling the registration for
the product
Dow contends that the ad
ministrator is required under the
terms of the Federal Insecticide,
Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act
to issue a definitive order and
findings of fact relative to the
cancellation of a pesticide
registration within 90 days of
icceiving the report of a scien
tific advisory committee on the
subject The report of the ad
visory committee recommended
that 2,4,5-T be
i cinstated
Dow spokesmen claim that
iccciit statements and orders
issued by the administrator do
not meet the i equipments oi the
law and have the eflect of
denying Dow an important step in
the appeal piocess

Charles L Hosier, dean of the
Penn State College of Earth and
Mineral Sciences, will serve as
banquet speaker February 7.
Second-day activities will offer
important presentations on new
vegetable varieties, the future of
vegetables, pesticides and pest
control, current vegetable
research projects underway,
management and storage of
vegetables, fertilization studies
ol sweet corn and green beans
and the potential of expanding
pepper and dry bean production
in Pennsylvania
The February 8 evening session
will feature slide and lecture
presentations on vegetable
production in Bavaria and ad
vances in the production of
vegetable crops

studies of mechanization in
tomato production for processed
