Alan Bair, Assistant County Agricultural - Agent TREATING MOLDY SPOTS ON WALLS Cool weather brings the usual problem with green to black spots on many walls. Many times concrete block milkhouse walls are a primary target. The condensed moisture stimulates the spreading mold growth. To stop the mold growth, moisture condensation must be prevented. Proper insulation of all outside walls and ceilings is necessary, as is a vapor barrier Treatment is only temporary and will not prevent the reoc curance of the, mold. The two common milk equipment sanitizers are usually effective, chlorine and quaternary am monium compounds. Chlorine solutions should be applied at a strength of 500 ppm. Since chlorine is quickly ab sorbed by organic matter, it soon becomes ineffective. Quaternary ammonium compounds are recommended for floors, walls, and ceilings. Solution strength should be between 500 and 1,000 ppm. Soak the surface completely, using a spray gun or floor broom. After scrubbing the surface, again cover the area with solution and do not rinse. A second treatment may be necessary three to five days later Remember sanitizer treatment will not prevent mold growth. It only removes the visible evidence. Prevention lies in proper insulation of the walls and good floor drainage FREE-STALL DAIRY HOUSING SYSTEMS GUIDELINE PROPOSED Proposed guidelines for dairy cattle free-stall housing systems were approved at a meeting of the Northeast Dairy Practices Committee. Seventy-five representatives of dairy in dustry, commercial, regulatory and educational institutions from 11 northeast states prepared these guidelines. The guidelines have taken into account the requirements of various state and municipal agencies. It is hoped that all farm inspection agencies will approve the guidelines. Then requirements will be similar for all northeast dairy farms. It will be a big step toward uniformity These dairy housing guidelines are not more regulations. Rather, they are intended to replace regulations with uniform recommendations agreed on by all dairy industry interests. The guidelines deal generally with milking, feeding and resting areas Specifically they cover ventilation, drainage, layout, and lighting and equipment for feeding and milking The housing guidelines will be provided to all regulatory agencies. If approved, they will become available to all diary fieldmen and allied industry persons The free-stall housing system guidelines should be in the best interest of all northeast dairy farmers. They shdtild directly benefit all who plan to build or remodel such systems. /-A
