    Twin Valley YF Seeks Members
On Thursday evening, January
6, 1972, a regular meeting of the
Twin Valley Young Farmers
Association will be held in the
vocational agriculture classroom
of the Twin Valley High School.
Topic for this meeting will be
“The Aims and Purposes of the
Young Farmers.” The program
will feature a panel discussion by
past presidents of the Twin
Valley Young Farmers, slides of
State Young Farmer activities,
and a short address by a State
Young Farmer officer.
The Young Farmers
Association is composed of far
mers in the Twin Valley School
District seeking to further their
knowledge of agriculture. By
definition, a “young” farmer is
any farmer willing to learn,
regardless of age.
The Association operates under
the guidance of the vocational
agriculture department of the
Twin Valley High School.
Activities of the Association
include eight to 10 instructional
meeting with topics for each
meeting chosen by the officers.
These meetings are held from
Up to three weeks

meeting being devoted to a topic.
Meetings for this year include the
following topics Waste
Disposal, Corn Contest
Evaluation, Safe Water Supplies,
New Com Growing Ideas, Grain
Sorghum as a Substitute for Cora,
and the Soil Conservation Ser
vice.
Other activities include a
summer barbecue, an annual
spring banquet, a corn contest
with divisions for both corn
grain and corn for silage, and
summer on-the-farm meetings.
Services of the local vo-ag
teacher are available to all local
farmers through the Young
Farmer Association.
Local membership is open to
all local farmers, with no local
membership dues. Local
members may also become
members of the State Young
Farmer Association. Highlights
of the State Association’s yearly
activities are its summer picnic
and farm tour and an autumn
convention.
At present the local Young
Farmer organization is com-

posed of a small group of full
time farmers. However, we
would like to take this op
portunity to invite all farmers
full-time or part-time within
the Twin Valley School District to
join our organization.
Pony Club Meets
The December meetiiig of the
Broken-Bit Light Horse and Pony
Club was held Friday, December
17. The meeting was held at the
home of club members Martha,
Jane and Debra Gregory, Lititz
RD4.
Vice presdient Natalie Immel
presided over the club’s
Christmas party. The club made
plans for a Skating party. Natalie
had some games which the club
played before the meeting.
A new movie was shown by
Robert Gregory called “A Horse
Made For Our Mountains.” The
club members enjoyed it very
much.
Club leader Mrs. Risser had a
gift for each club member. The
gifts all were something to help

A Finnsheep Breeders
Association has been formed in
the United States for the im
provement, identification and
recording of Finnsheep
The breed is a native of Finland
and the first animals of the breed
were imported from Ireland to
the United States by the
University of Minnesota and the
U. S Department of Agriculture
in 1968. A second importation was
made in 1969.
Since then Finnsheep have
become available from Canada
and a number of private flocks
have been established, although
many of the Finnsheep are kept
members keep their horses m top
shape.
Anyone between the ages of 9 to
19 interested in joining the club

An important objective of the
association is to encourage and
support breeding research to
discover how the Finnsheep
breed can be used most ef
fectively in crossbreeding to
improve efficiency of com
mercial lamb production
The association also has the
objective of striving to con
tinuously improve and promote
Finnsheep in the interests of
more profitable sheep en
terprises
Production records are
required for registration and
every certificate of registration
will include information on
numbers of lambs born from
animals in the pedigree
Fmnsheep have lambing rates
which are about double those of
most domestic breeds in this
country Flock averages of 3, 4
and 5 lambs born per ewe have
been reported in Finland
They are expected to be very
useful in crossbreeding to in
crease efficiency of lamb meat
production and to develop more
productive strains of sheep

Ml Governor Gets
Local Mushrooms
Insisting that it was the “spirit
of the holiday season and not just
gloating”, Pennsylvania
Secretary of Agriculture Jim
McHale presented a bushel of
mushrooms to Maryland
Governor Marvin Mandel
Pennsylvania Governor Milton
J Shapp late this summer
wagered a bushel of mushrooms
against a bushel of Maryland
crabs on the outcome of the world
senes Shortly after Pittsburgh
nipped Baltimore, four games to
three. Gov Mandel paid off the
bet
Recently, Secretary McHale
told Maryland’s chief executive,
“We can’t see denying you the
pleasure of the world’s best
mushrooms at the holiday
season. So Governor Mandel,
please accept with Governor
Shapp’s best wishes his half of the
World Senes wager.”
Pennsylvania leads the nation
and the world in the production of
mushrooms, growing 123,000,000
pounds in the past year or 63 per
cent of the total U. S. harvest.

presentation were Charles
Lucido and A 1 Bazzoli, Chester
County, representing the
Mushroom Growers Co-operative
Association of Pennsylvania,
which provided the mushrooms.
In the Kitchen
HAM-YAM HASH
% cups chopped cooked
ham
3 cups diced cooked yams
% cup chopped fresh
onions
y* cup snipped parsley
% cup milk
2 tbsps. salad fell
Combine ham, yams,
onions, parsley and milk.
Heat oil in large skillet.
Spread yam mixture evenly
in skillet. Cook over low heat
30 minutes or until bottom is
crusty. Makes 4 servings.
