Comment Period Is Extended The comment period for the recently published U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) proposal for the regulation of bovine semen in interstate commerce is being extended by 30 days. Notice of the extension was scheduled for publication in the Federal Register November 30. With the extension, the comment period will continue through December 30 Officials of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Service (APHS) decided to extend the comment period after numerous responses were received from interested groups and individuals. HOOBER & SON m Intercourse, Penn. possible changes in the proposed regulations The proposed regulations are designed to strengthen protection of livestock against diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, leptospirosis, trichomoniasis, vibriosis and paratuberculosis These, and others including foot and-mouth disease should it enter the United States, could be spread to many artificially in seminated animals through the use of frozen semen from infected sires, according to the USDA The proposal calls for donor sires to be inspected and tested for tuberculosis, brucellosis, leptospirosis, trichomoniasis, vibriosis and paratuberculosis Bulls used in continuous production would be inspected and tested every six months Sires just entering production would have to be examined and tested at least 60 days before the first semen collection for in terstate shipment.
