Smokey The mystery of who will suc ceed Smokey Bear as the world’s most famous living fire prevention symbol was solved recently. Secretary of Agriculture Clifford Hardin and Chief of the Forest Service Edward P. Cliff welcomed to Washington “Little Smokey,” a year-old black bear cub, brown phase similar to the original Smokey, from the Lin coln National Forest in New Mexico. He will be groomed as heir to the “living Smokey” at the National Zoo in Washington. For months now, as Smokey has progressed into old age, the question has grown more pressing; Who would succeed him when he dies? The answer was revealed at the ceremony today. Following his presentation to official Government circles at a reception in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Patio in Washington, Little Smokey was moved to quarters readied for him in the zoo, next to the en HOLDEN HARVEST SALE 297th GARDEN SPOT SALE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9 LANCASTER, PENNA. However, with no natural heir apparent, Smokey and Goldie are “adopting” the cub—a recourse often followed by their human counterpart parents. Like Smokey, Little Smokey is orphaned. He was discovered last summer wandering alone and homeless in the Cloudcroft District of the Lincoln National Forest. He was given a tem porary home by the U.S. Forest Service. The bear cub was flown to Washington recently, ac companied by Ray L. Bell, retired state forester of New Mexico. It was Bell who found and cared for the original Smokey Bear who had been burned badly in a New Mexico forest fire back in 1950 and who, nine years ago, brought Goldie here from New Mexico and EARL L. GROFF Local Rep. Strasburg, Pa. an Heir The decision for “adoption” was made by the Smokey Bear Executive Committee, composed of representatives of the Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters, because of the success of having a living symbol of Smokey Bear. (Zoo officials report Smokey is the most popular feature among all the animals there.) A number of dignitaries at tended Little Smokey’s reception, including members of the Association of State Foresters and the Advertising Council, Inc., which has voluntarily handled public relations matters for the Smokey Bear campaign for two decades. Jackson Weaver, well known radio and television personality, as well as the official voice of Smokey, was master of ceremonies. Also taking part in the reception were a number of Washington area children. Little Smokey may now be visited daily at the National Zoo in his cage next to Smokey’s. Public Sale Register SAT. December 4,1971 UEP to Study Egg Glut Causes Over-expansion and backward integration into egg production has prompted United Egg Producers (UEP) to form a Production Intelligence Com mittee to study and inform the industry and the public on production practices within the industry. At an emergency egg industry meeting in Atlanta on November 6 the Executive Committee of the nationwide federation of egg marketing cooperatives reviewed reports of “alarming, shocking and totally irrespon sible actions on the part of non agricultural and non agribusiness individuals and firms that are getting into or expanding egg production,” according to Mike Possiter of Upland, California, chairman of the newly formed committee and a member of the UEP executive committee. He stated his committee planned an extensive study of these reports and will make public its findings. He further stated that, in his opinion, the industry and the public will be very much surprised when they learn of some of the things going on in the industry. The committee chairman said that all committee members had not been named but that the membership of the committee Public Sale OF VALUABLE MODERN FARM MACHINERY & TOOLS SATURDAY, Located approx. 3 mile northeast of Stewartstown, York Co., Pa. near the Pleasant Valley Golf Course Int. This new committee plans to probe deep into who is behind this expansion and let everyone know the names of firms and in dividuals responsible,” stated Rossiter. The egg industry is currently attempting to get emergency legislation through the U.S Congress that will provide for a nationwide sell-off of fowl to ease the economic burden of producers. The UEP offices in Atlanta, Georgia said average farm egg prices had been below cost of production for over 18 months and that the industry was on the verge of bankruptcy.
