—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 6,1971 22 I “ “ V’ eb ° ' >* V**' November is the time for squirrels and nuts Again this year, I’ve picked up black walnuts and painstakingly removed the thick green husks. There are several methods of removing them, but I simply sit down and hammer them off on a block of wood Some folks put the walnuts through a hand corn sheller and others throw them in the driveway until they are a black mess After the hulls are off, they must be carefully dried before the shells are cracked open Next comes the tedious job of picking out the nutmeats. Then we wonder why nuts cost so much per pound 1 xxx The birthday celebrations m our family come in spurts There are four in about six weeks in the Spring and then another four in six weeks in the Fall So we bake cakes and buy presents in a flurry of activity only to relax then for several months. Recently we tried to phone our son on his 18th birthday only to learn he was spending the weekend at another college on a judging team. We hope to keep better track of our eight year old on her bir thday. She has a list of 17 things she wants pasted on our refrigerator I’m afraid she will be slightly disappointed when the day comes But at least she is optimistic xxx Last week our family took a drive through the neighboring counties to see the Autumn foliage Our youngest saw her Farm Women Calendar Saturday, November 6 10 a.m County Convention, Farm and Home Center.
