Like most youngsters, John’s pigs needed to be coaxed for

"little pigish” about insisting on getting their share plus a little extra of that
appetizing pig starter.

7 Lancaster Co. Bulls Enter
ABS Young Sire Program
Seven young Holstein sires
from Lancaster County and
vicinity recently entered the
progeny test program of
American Breeders Service, Inc.
of DeForest, Wis.
This testing program is one of
the largest and most extensive of
its kind, annually testing about
100 young Holstein sires.
The purpose of the program is
to provide a continuous supply of
plus proven sires for service and
the ABS stud. American
Breeders Service is the largest AI
Organization m the United
States, breeding almost 2,000,000
cows each year.
The bulls entering the progeny
test program are the result of
special mating contracts between
ABS and the owners of the bulls’
dams. Three hundred of the top
Registered Holstein cows in the
nation are contracted and bred to
the top AI sires in the country in
the hope of obtaining a bull calf
for the program.
The bulls are taken to ABS at'
six months of age where they are
FFA
assigned a PT (progeny test)
number. At semen producing
age, they are collected and tested
in ABS Associated Herds
throughout the nation.
After initial use in these herds
the bulls are “put on the shelf”
for four years to await the results
of their progeny test Those
whose daughters produce
significantly higher than their
herdmates are returned to active
service, the remainder are
slaughtered.
To date the bulls returned to
active service have an average
predicted difference of over +BOO
pounds.

beginning their testing are: 61506

Penny Saver
A good penny-saving tip is to
select quality according to the
way you’ll prepare and serve the
food, says Harold E. Neigh,
extension consumer economics
specialist at The Pennsylvania
State University. Broken pieces
of canned tomatoes are a good
choice for a casserole and cost
less than whole tomatoes
