Information Is Available on Poultry Manure
A new circular giving up-to
date information on many
questions asked concerning the
use, handling and marketing of
poultry manure has just been
released by Pennsylvania State
University, College of
Agriculture, Extension service.
Some of the information con
tained in the circular is as
follows
The plant nutrient content of
poultry manure varies greatly,
depending on moisture and litter
content But normally, a ton of 75
per cent moisture droppings will
contain 30 pounds of nitrogen, 20

pounds of phosphate and 10
pounds of potash.
The loss of nitrogen through
fermentation can be reduced by
the use of; (a) ventilated, well
insulated houses; (b) litter
materials which will rapidly dry
the manure; and (c) super
phosphate to reduce gaseous loss
of nitrogen as ammonia.
One ton of superphosphate can
save about 70 pounds of nitrogen
valued at about $7. An ex
penditure of $35 for a ton of
superphosphate to save $7 worth
of nitrogen is economical,
because the phosphate content of
the manure will also be rein
forced.
Also, undesirable ammonia
fumes in the poultry house will be
reduced.
Use up to 200 pounds of 20 per
cent superphosphate per ton of
fresh droppings. This is
equivalent to four pounds
superphosphate per day per 100
laying hens.
Precautions should be taken
not to allow birds to eat super
phosphate
The amount of manure
produced by a flock will run
about one pound of fresh manure
for each pound of feed consumed.
If the flock eats one ton of feed a
week, it will produce a out one ton
of fresh manure.
An interesting chart is also
included m the circular showing
the amount of poultry manure
that is advisable to use on dif
ferent crops.
Another question commonly
asked concerns weed seed ger
mination after passing through
the bird. An experiment using 25
different weed seeds in poultry
feed showed very little ger
mination of the seeds after they
were excreted by the bird.
Several questions on marketing
poultry manure are discussed.
