Penn Manor FFA Attends Kansas City Convention
On Saturday morning, October
9, nine seniors of the Penn Manor
FFA and advisor, August Bir
chler, left the Penn Manor High
School and headed west for
Kansas City, Mo., to attend the
National FFA Convention.
The nine members making the
trip were: Dennis Landis, Dave
Gerlach, Clyde Erb, Glenn
Newcomer, Glenn Rohrer,
Martin Harnish, Jim Charles,
Lloyd Hess and Tim Herr.
The group left in a Chevy Van
and camped along the way to
Kansas City.
On Saturday night the group
camped near Cincinnati, Ohio.
On Sunday traveled through
Cincinnati and saw the Red’s old
and new baseball stadiums and a
couple of old steam, river boats.
From there we traveled on to
Indianapolis Speedway and
visited the speedway.
We reached St. Louis Sunday
evening where we took in a few
more interesting land marks,
such as the new Cardinal
Stadium, Gateway Arch, Paddle
Wheelers, and the St. Louis
Airport, and then camped outside
of St. Louis.
The next morning we jour
neyed on to Missouri where we
toured Daniel Boone’s Home and
Merrimac caves, which was the
hideout of Jesse James.
After camping on the outskirts
of Kansas City on Monday night,
we drove into town Tuesday

Manor FFA members: Parke
Hess, a poultry judge; Dave

When not attending the Con
vention at Kansas City, we toured
the Truman Library and
Museum, the Kansas City,
Kansas, stockyards, the
American Royal Horse Show, and
the General Motors car plant in
Kansas.
On Saturday morning we
headed east again, stopping at
the St. Louis Gateway Arch to

the Arch to look 30 miles over
Missouri and Illinois.
We camped outside St. Louis
Saturday night and left early
Sunday morning to arrive at the
Penn Manor High School at 7
p.m. Sunday evening.
It wasn’t a monotonous trip
because when we got tired of
riding we’d park the van beside a
nice grass field and start a
football game. Although we had a
lot of fun, I believe everyone was
ready to see good old Lancaster
County again.
