20—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. October 23,1971 I i ' do ' s 1 W ebo ' >• VH**" , It is with mixed emotions that I see winter approaching. Hopefully there will be more time to relax and do the many things we enjoy. There are lots of jobs to do such as plant »the wheat, roof the addition to the barn and store machinery before we can relax. xxx This Fall I spent a peaceful day at Camp Swatara in Berks County In the afternoon, I followed a trail up into the woods. After walking a mile or so I found a flat stone to sit on and listened. The only sound was a blue jay in the distance and a tiny sound nearby. It turned out to be merely a cricket moving from one dead leaf to another. After a period of meditation I was surprised to notice a chipmunk scurrying around under the oaks. It really won’t be too long until the mountains are covered with snow and it is deer hunting time. XXX During my almost 20 year relationship with PTA and Home- School groups, attendance has always been a problem. Parents come to the first meeting to see the child’s room and teacher. Then, they often do not appear again till next year. The wide variety of programs planned doesn’t seem to draw them. Pork Workshop Set The 2nd Annual National Pork Promotion Education Workshop, sponsored by the Pork Industry Committee of the National Live Stock and Meat Board, is designed to help solve some of the practical problems faced by professionals in the field of pork promotion, according to John D. Lane, Committee Secretary. This year’s workshop is scheduled for October 25-26, and will be held in the Meat Board offices in Chicago A National Decline Deaths fiom cancel of the uloins base declined about 50 percent m a geneiahon. This is due in huge pait to eaily detec tion hv the Pap lest and piompt treatment, says the Amcncan Cancel Society. Ida Risser However, last year our local group was successful with a program planned and par ticipated in by the children themselves. There were songs, original poetry and instrumental music. It reminded me of the Christmas programs presented annually in the two-room school at Oregon years ago. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways. XXX Housecleaning time and spider webs. I don’t know if my old house has many more cracks than the average home, but the spiders and I wage a continual battle. What I undo one day they do again the next - a pox on them.
