Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 23,1971 —11 ‘Americans Must Work,’ York Says “Americans must work to accomplish the necessary; those who work must be compensated justly; and the eligible workers who elect to do nothing, should not expect support from those who labor,” stated a leader of one of the world’s leading grade “A” milk bargaining cooperatives. John C. York, general manager of Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative, gave his views on the current American dilemma at the Association’s headquarters in Syracuse, N.Y. recently. In a prepared statement, York said, “Labor groups, it has been reported, are being blamed for lowering the production per man hour of this country’s labor force. Once heralded as the saviors of the sweat shop working man, these unions are becoming the recipients of the wrath of American voters. U.S. Meat Inspectors Indicted The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced that it has removed from duty 40 federal meat inspectors following their indictments on bribery and conspiracy charges by a Federal grand jury in Boston. USDA said they would remain off inspection “One of the reasons for this change of feeling, I am told, is due to the wage increases recently negotiated by certain union officials without any consideration of the effect these settlements would have on the economy of the nation. Another is the manner in which certain leaders have apparently placed themselves ahead of country during the wag-price freeze. “It should also be noted that management, m its race for excess profits, cannot be stamped as lily-white. However, both labor and management have been unable to hold down prices, causing this country’s inability to compete in world trade. This dilemma has cost taxpayers millions of dollars and caused waves of unemployment in the United States,” York said. rolls pending the outcome of court actions resulting from the indictments There are a total of 7,932 Federal meat and poultry in spectors in the United States. Officials said an investigation of the Federal inspection program in the Boston area was begun in late 1969 after USDA’s Consumer and Marketing Service asked the Office of the Inspector General - the Department’s investigative and audit unit - to look into a possible bribery case. As the investigation broadened, the Federal Bureau of In vestigation and other elements of the U S. Department of Justice, and the Internal Revenue Service were brought into the in vestigation. In April 1970, a grand jury was impaneled to consider evidence being developed by the U.S. Attorney in Boston, resulting in the indictments. Three meat processing companies and six company officials in the Boston area also were indicted on similar charges. C&MS Administrator Dr. Clayton Yeutter said that since USDA has been aware of the impending indictments for several week, plans have been developed for replacing the in dicted inspectors. He said that a new group of highly qualified and experienced inspectors is already on its way to the Boston area Egg ‘Features’ Urged United Egg Producers recently issued a nationwide call on its members and the nation’s food chains toxfeature eggs during the next two weeks. Fred Adams, president of the nationwide federation of egg marketing cooperatives, an nounced that all egg producer members of the UEP affiliates would be asked to offer features to their customers for a one to two week period beginning Oc tober 10. He stated that this activity of UEP was a new approach to quickly moving small amounts of surplus from the egg market.
