USDA Announces Bee Payments
The U.S. Department of Agri
culture has announced an in
demnity payment program for
beekeepers whose bees are kill
ed by pesticides used near their
bee colonies.
The program was made
retroactive to cover bee losses
dating back to January 1, 1967.
It is authorized through 1973.
Regulations containing terms
and conditions of payment have
been filed with the Federal
Register. Beekeepers may apply
for payments at county Agricul

no way contributed to the loss
of his bees; he took reasonable
precautions to protect his bees
from exposure to pesticides if

after exposure he took reason
able action to reduce the bee

The amount of indemnity
payment to an eligible beekeep
er will depend on the extent of
damage to a colony or queen
nucleus (colony), at will be de
termined by the ASC county
committee on the basis of re
placement cost of the bees des
troyed, loss of sales of honey
and beeswax, loss of pollination
fees, and loss of sales of queen
bees and packaged bees.
