Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 18,1971—19 Ida’s Notebook It surely does get quiet around here dur ing the day now that the children are back in school. Of course, there is the drone of the tractor as the big silo is filled for the first time. And I do rattle a few kettles and pans as I can the bountiful harvest from my garden. So the hours pass quickly and soon it is time to meet the three buses that take each child to a different schoo}. With three buses rfiorning and afternoon for the next three years, I figure there will be over 3,200 deadlines to meet what a prospect. Last week we tried a recipe for soft pretzels. Our problem was that they were too light in color. This enterprise inspired us to visit that historic town of Lititz and really see how pretzels are made. We found Lewis Sturgis very obliging as he explained that they should be dipped in straw water and potash. He is 89 years old and the last of 14 children of Julius Sturgis who founded America’s oldest pretzel bakery in 1861. led by Mrs. C. R. Frey. Plans were made for the Society to visit and entertain patients at the Harrisburg State Hospital. In other business, the group voted approval of a refreshment stand to be operated by the Society at the Dale Berrier (Continued on Page 21) By Ida Bister My .children enjoyed the story of the folded arms of children in prayer being the inspiration for the shape of the pretzel. Watching a machine .twist 50 pretzels per minute intrigued us and showed the significance of machinery in modern production methods. For the past several weeks. I’ve had a new sight to watch on the Conestoga Our son Ken neth gave me six geese after I told him the enjoyment I got from seeing the neighbor’s ducks paddle around They are a beautiful sight and a much appreciated gift.
