t j |r\ VOL. 16 NO. 43 53rd Ephrata Fair Planned The 53rd Ephrata Fair will be held September 21-25. A highlight of the five-day event will be the colorful parade which will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 22 (Rain date - September 23), featuring high school bands; drum and bugle corps; marching units; Miss Lancaster County and Mrs. Lancaster County Fire Chief Contestants. Daytime visitors to the fair will find many interesting displays of fruit, vegetables, flowers, needlework, home- baked and canned goods, art, crafts, models and 4-H and FFA exhibits which are displayed in store windows and exhibits buildings. Tents located in the Ephrata Community Park will display cattle, sheep, swine, baby beef, poultry, seed, forage grain, and tobacco. At the strictly educational fair, a wide selection of displays will be scheduled including livestock, grain, vegetables, fruits, nuts, Home and dairy products, domestic arts, and school exhibits. Exhibits will be received from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday and from 7:30 a.m. till 1 p.m. Wednesday. Hastings Brothers' Hogs Winners Mike and Brian Hastings, Kirk wood brothers, took several top honors in the Solanco Fair Hog Show Thursday. Shpwing Chester Whites, Mike won the grand championship of the show, while Brian took reserve grand championship awards. Pa. Dairy Princess Pageant,; All-American Show Planned Miss Marilyn Krantz, New Providence RDI, who is the current Pennsylvania Dairy Princess, and Miss Gayle Krogstad, Minnesota, the new American Dairy Princess, will participate in the coronation of a new Pennsylvania Dairy Prin cess Thursday evening, Sep tember 23. Among contestants for the state dairy title in ceremonies at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Harrisburg Miss Susan Kauff man, Elizabethtown RDI, the recently selected Lancaster County Dairy Princess. A Miss Congeniality and runner- up will also be selected at the state contest. The coronation will take place Judging activities for 4-H and FFA members begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday with the Baby Beef show. At 8:45 p.m. Wednesday there will be lots of action with a calf roping demonstration. Following this, the calves will be placed in a ring and boys will compete in a calf scramble. Dairy cattle judging is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Thursday. The FFA calf award Mike’s hogs also won the champion pen of two class. The heavyweight champion pen of four sent to John Dilworth. John also was named champion showman, with Clyde Dearoff taking the champion fitter prize. A total of 52 hogs were entered in the show. While the banquet will be held at the Cathedral, the show will be held at the Farm Show Building. The banquet recognizes class award sponsors and out standing herdsmen. Wisconsin, with 30 Holstein cattle registered, will be a new entry in the Pennsylvania All - American. Wisconsin will be represented in the All American and the Eastern National Holstein Show. The latter event, one of three such held in the nation, is being staged concurrently with the All- American. will be held at 11 45 a.m. Thur sday. The show will conclude at 8 p.m. Friday with the FFA fat hog consignment sale. See other local articles throughout. A nine-year-old, first-year 4-H member took the top spot in the Solanco Fair Baby Beef Show Thursday. She is Kim Weaver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jason Weaver, Quarryville RD2. Young Kim first won the 4-H Hereford heavyweight '•lass, then the breed championship and overall 4-H championship. As the judge was pondering his choice for grand champion of the show, a young Angus broke his halter and toppled Kim as he headed for his stall in the tent. Except for a few tears and a sore ankle, Kim appeared to be unhurt and quickly returned to the show. The judge had made his decision and promptly indicated Kim’s steer as grand champion of the show. Kim’s steer was one of a group bought through 4-H in Colorado. Donald Dorward, Quarryville RD2, showed Angus in both 4-H and FFA classes.
