AM A Reports on Doctors in Rural Arens
Here’s a tip for the rural com
munity that doesn’t have a phy
sician and wants one- “Look for
an MD who grew up in a small
community, perhaps even in the
same part of the country,” sug
gests the current AM A UPDATE
(July/August)
Some 132 rural counties in 26
states are presently without a
non-federal physician - “Para
doxically, most MD’s who live
and practice in rural areas en
joy their work,” says Dr Bond
L Bible, secretary of AMA’s
Council on Rural Health “Once
he has established his practice
there, a doctor isn’t likely to
leave.”
Nearly half the physicians poll
ed in a Council survey who were
practicing in towns smaller than
2 500 said they were brought up
in a small town. Dr. "Bible says.

AMA is helping small com
munities solve then medical
care problems in several ways
The Association’s Physicians’
Placement Service helps com
munities find a doctor, and vice
versa
Particularly in sparsely-popu
lated areas, “we urge groups of
communities to establish a cen
trally-located medical center
with a group practice, togethei
with mobile health units or satel
lite health stations,” Di Bible
says “Thanks to today’s auto
mobiles and roadways a doctor
may be 15 or 20 miles away in
distance, but only minutes away
n time ”
