Ladies,
Have You Heard?
By Doris Thomas, Extension Home Economist
Manmade fibers with built-in easy care signaled a new era in
washability, from wearables to walkables, clothing to carpets. But
the modern day miracles also introduced a prob- r- - ".'1
lem static. [
This electrifying force cause material to | i
creep and cling and may give off unintended and >1
not romatically induced sparks when one person \
touches another after walking across certain car
pets. Many aspects of the static problem have
been solved by industry.
Now it looks as if MOST of the creep, cling
and tingle will be gone from wonderfully durable
washable nylon. Major fiber companies are not
making “anti-stats.” It’s not that the hair-raising
static is gone, but simply dissipated more quickly
as happens with natural fibers.
But there are other bonuses. The new nylons
absorb moisture faster, making clothing feel cool
er and more comfortable Anti
static properties also increase soil
resistance and soil releasing
characteristics, Whiter whites
and brighter colors aie the order
of the day.
First introduced in women’s
intimate apparel, the “anti-stats”
graduated to pantyhose and
men’s socks and are now moving
into the outerwear field
Conventional nylon will be
‘‘old-fashioned” before so very
long it seems To the consumer,
the chemistry behind it all is
unimportant, but the lesults are
certain to be appreciated
To a lesser degree, polyesteis
and acrylics, also wonderful
washables, are static prone It’s
encouraging to note that these
synthetics are also under close
scrutiny by industry laboratories
to eliminate the negative—static
and increase the positive—easy
washability
Many Uses Of Glycerine
Glycerine, a clear, colorless,
svrupy liquid, is a substance de
rived from animal and vegetable
fats.
Commercially, millions of
pounds of glycerine a year are
used m products bought for per
sonal and household use Den
tifrices and skin lotions are
among the more important
New Non-Cling Nylons
It has long been used in the
food field as well, since it holds
moisture in products that would
otherwise dry out Pioccssors
add glycerine derivatives to im
prove such foods as confection
ery, gelatins, and frozen des
serts
And pharmaceuticals, for in
ternal and external use, may
contain glycerine
Theie are also many conven
iences that anse from its avail
ability both on the kitchen shelf
and in the medicine cabinet As
r convenient household helper,
keep a bottle of glycerine handy
Here are just a few suggestions
for its use
Kitchen utensils such as totary
egg beaters, meat choppeis and
others with cogs that require oil
ing, should be lubricated with a
few drops of glycerine instead of
machine oil If you use oil there
is always a danger of its con
taminating the food, but gly
cerine is harmless, and it gives
off no unpleasant flavor
A teaspoon or two of glycerine
added to your regular recipe for
blended or boiled icing will help
keep it fiom drying out
After cleaning a bathroom mir
ror, rub it with glycerine to leave
a microscopically thin film so
your mirror won’t steam from
the hot water of your shower
