Alan Bair, Assistant 703 661 County Agricultural 700 Agent 699 697 Utilize Your DHIA Records Get youi full money’s worth out of your DHIA dollar 1 Many dairymen are guilty ol not using the vast amount of in formation they receive monthly on their DHIA reports They seem to consider production test ing a routine expense with no return 695 695 692 691 651 691 Nothing could be further from the truth Your monthly report could be the most important thing you receive in the mail, next to your milk check The management information alone is worth the cost of testing if you take advantage of the available 'information With hired labor, pipelines, milking parlors and larger cow numbers, it’s difficult to “eyeball” produc tion with any degree of accuracy. A short time spent each month going over your monthly report will bring you up to date as to your current herd and individual cow status Culling one animal or breeding one additional good cow on time could well pay for the testing. 689 666 687 684 680 683 680 677 680 680 679 677 677 The other valuable benefit from testing is the documenta tion of production date for future breeding use. It is extremely surprising how many new cows are added each year with incom plete identification. With im proper indentification the data is lost to future generations At first ,it is easy to blame this lack of information on the super visor, but, how can the super visor fill in the information'll it is not supplied by the farmer? It is the breeder who is to bene fit from the information, so he should be interested in supplying all correct and necessary infor mation. 674 674 674 673 673 672 671 669 669 669 668 So reap the profits from your investment and utilize your DHIA records. At the same time do your part for tomorrow and be sure all identification in formation -is complete and ac curate. 668 667 666 665 Do You Participate? 665 We are fortunate here in Southeastern Pennsylvania to have some of the best dairy cat tle in the country right here at home and within easy driving distance in neighboring states. We not only have many out standing animals and herds, but these great animals are brought together in some of the most im pressive dairy shows in the coun try. 665 647 664 663 663 663 660 Do you as an individual dairy man take full advantage of these gieat opportunities? With this great concentration of good dairy cattle, the average breeder can observe firsthand the results of v/ell established and proven breeding programs and manage ment systems. 660 660 660 646 658 656 As any breeder and manager knows, the old saying of “a pic ture is worth a thousand words” is very fitting when dealing with cattle. The one-to-one exchange possible when visiting' either at a home herd or at a show is priceless. 656 655 655 651 648 655 Be a good listener and observer when visiting. Let your host tell his story. Even if you don’t fully agree with what he says, you will probably still go away with a new idea or a different outlook on things. Be courteous, but don’t be afraid to ask questions. Dairy shows at any level are a gxeat opportunity to observe and learn. Even though you aren’t an exhibitor, be interested and ac tive in your local shows.
