20—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. September 4.1971 Idas Notebook On Sunday afternoon, I and my seven and eleven year old took a walk through the fields and woods on our farm. A jenny wren scolded us and we studied the largest oak tree on our place. We talked of the grapevine swing my sisters and I used long ago. We identified a large tree along the fence row as an ailanthus It grows to a height of 50 to 80 feet and has leaves similar to a sumac. I would venture to guess many farm wives do not get out to the fartherest corner of their farms to really see what they are working so hard to keep. We’ve just finished eating a family of gingerbread cookies Judy made one to rep- resent each of us, plus a cat and dogs We have an ample supply of pets just now In addition to our own Irish Setter and I have had to watch the de struction of the house, barn and silo on my home farm to make way for a new highway. Only when we travel a long distance in a short time do we appre ciate the new roads. When we flew to Michigan to get a new car and drove the 600 miles home in exactly 10 hours, we thought the roads were fine The different approach seems to depend on which side of the fence we view the new trans portation facilities Border Collie we are keeping a dog and bird for my sister. I never realized a bird could have so many songs a happy one, a scolding one and even a whistle of appreciation Tend ing these animals keeps Cindy busy. * Jr * * There are times when we ap prove of new super highways and there are times when they break our hearts ALLEN H.
