But working with the cow in
this manner cuts down on the
herd average, he noted.
He also said that all animals
raised in the herd are given a
second chance if they have a
poor first lactation, particularly
if they have good type.
One of the most difficult de
cisions the Holstein breeder has
to make, Frey feels, is which
bull to use. He noted that prac
tically every bull from every
stud service is availble to the
farmer. “Making up your mind
about which one to use is very
difficult,” he said.
He recommended that farm
ers, even though they may feel
they don’t have the time, should
spend more time visiting other
farms to see daughters of bulls
they are interested in using.
■Looking ahead, Frey feels that
Lancaster County has gone too -

pions in the state shows. He re
calls that during his own 4-H
days from 1947 to 53, he showed
the first prize county herd three
times.
He would like to see the pres
ent stock developing on his farm
he would like to see the county
award returned to Lancaster
County.

Fultonway Farms tradition could
continue indefinitely.
