Shropshire Official Explains Kit
Douglas Chambers, president
of the American Shropshire
Registry Association, recently
lauded the Penn-Mar Shropshire
Breeders Club’s Loin Eye Im
provement Kit.
In a letter to club members,
Chambers said, “This is abso
lutely one of the finest ideas I’ve
heard of, and ‘knocks into a
cocked hat’ the biggest alibis
usually given for not taking part
in carcass programs; namely, it
is too complex or no way to get
cut-out information.”
Chambers went on to say that
not only does the Loin-Eye Im
provement Kit make this key
measurement available to any
sincerely interested breeder, but
just as important, it promotes
the sale, through local channels,
of premium fresh lamb.
With the Penn-Mar Loin-Eye
Improvement Kit, Chambers
claims that the most remotely lo
cated producer can begin getting
carcass data. “It would be my
opinion," he states, “that once
started, the breeder will quickly
see the potential for using this
information for genetic flock im-

“Top carcasses,” Chambers
says, “come from the kind of
live sheep that make the pro
ducer the best financial returns.
This kind of sheep, because they
frequently are weak-pasturned,
course-shouldered, longer-neck
ed, looser-fleeced, hard feeling,
‘fiery-headed’ and restless and
difficult to hold have not won in
shows, particularly as lambs, so
we’ve gone to the typier, lighter,
smoother (fat), denser fleeced,
slower growing, more docile
strains to win our ribbons and
hence, fame as successful breed
ers!”
Chambers agrees with the
Penn-Mar Club’s “Thoughts on
Selecting” which appear in their
Loin-Eye Improvement Kit. “If
