Cucumber
(Continued from Page 1)
Smoker said the machine cov
ers the one acre in about four
hours. He said this is about
twice as fast and 10 times easier
than the previous system of
gathering by hand into boxes
- or bags. It also eliminates the
necessity-of gathering up the
bags of cucumbers after picking
is finished.
Smoker emphasized that a
primary advantage of the ma
chine is that it’s much easier on
the pickers. When the work is
finished, they’re full of smiles,
instead of suffering with back
aches and headaches, he said.
Stoltzfus originally started
with a half acre of cucumbers,
but quit producing them last
year because of the labor in
volved in harvesting. But Smok
er noted that his son-in-law be
gan talking last year about put
ting in an acre this year so the
father-in-law responded by
promising to develop a machine
to make the work a little easier.
Smoker previously operated
the Smoker Elevator Plant and
has been involved with develop
ing - new machinery for, the
former New Holland Machine
Company, now the New Holland
Division of Sperry Rand.
